Overview

Through the courses offered and additional program requirements, students will deepen their knowledge of second language acquisition theories, principles and practices of bilingual education, and research in the field of bilingual education. Core questions explored throughout the program include: How are languages learned or acquired? How can a foreign language be used to teach non-language subject content? and, How can bilingual teaching practice be informed by research?

The study program consists of completing four courses, a four-month stay abroad, a four-week internship at a bilingual school and subsequent report, and an oral exam.  Details regarding all program requirements can be found on the website of the AG-Diversitätsstudien (German only).

Skills and knowledge

In addition to studying English and a non-language content subject (i.e. History, Art, etc.), students must be enrolled in the Masters of Education program at TU Dortmund or another university in NRW. Practicing teachers who studied English and a non-language content subject are also welcome to enroll.

Field of activity

Students who complete the study program will be prepared to teach their non-language content subject through English at the school form for which they have studied. Students will receive a certificate upon completion of the program, which is awarded in addition to the Master of Education diploma.

Because of the increasing number of schools in NRW offering bilingual programs and branches, the "Bilinguales Lehren und Lernen" certificate can be an advantage when applying for teaching positions.
