The afternoon opened with the Kids Run over 600 meters. Over 60 highly enthusiastic children took part – cheered on by their parents as well as students and staff. They were accompanied by Wanda and Pilo, the two mascots of university sports, which put radiant smiles on everyone’s faces and saw to a particularly happy atmosphere.
Top places in many races for athletes from TU Dortmund University
The 2.5K, 5K and 10K runs then followed, in which not only experienced runners but also lots of amateurs came into their own. First to cross the line was Kevin Pilgrim in the 2.5K run, who won for the first time, having come second for many years. Tilda Pothmann also delivered a particularly outstanding performance: She successfully fought off all the competition as an under-16 runner.
With around 500 entrants, the 5K run that followed was the competition with the most participants of the day. In a gripping finish, Lorenz Rix, a student at TU Dortmund University, beat Colin Kolbe in the final spurt, laying the groundwork for an extraordinary series of wins on this day. With a commanding victory in the overall placings and the under-16 category, Karlotta Jule Kranz also gave a convincing performance.
Giant caterpillar wins costume contest
Apart from the sporting achievements, the many runners in fancy dress created a fun atmosphere along the route. The prize for the best costume went to a giant caterpillar with seven heads, which delighted both the audience and the participants.
Professor Manfred Bayer, President of TU Dortmund University, and Sina Diekmann (Chief Sports Officer of the World University Games 2025) gave the starting signal for the main 10K run, which athletes from TU Dortmund University again dominated. Lara Kiene, a student at TU Dortmund University, won the women’s race by a long shot. In the men’s race, Lorenz Rix was able to celebrate his second victory – in a vigorous sprint to the finishing line, he narrowly beat Jonas Schmitz from RWTH Aachen University to secure his second title.
For particularly ambitious participants, the Campus Champ contest represented a special sporting challenge: All entrants who completed both the 5K and the 10K run and also competed in the Math Tower Run up 220 steps were ranked. Because he came first in the 5K and 10K runs, Lorenz Rix was the overall winner in the Campus Champ ranking – and able to celebrate an impressive triple victory on that day. Antonia Köhr won the women’s race.
FISU torch shines bright on campus
A special highlight of the day was the symbolic relay race featuring the torch of the FISU World University Games, which – also in anticipation of the Rhine Ruhr Games 2025 – underpinned the international dimension of sport at TU Dortmund University. The torch was carried by representatives from the world of sport and members of TU Dortmund University – including Sina Diekmann (Chief Sports Officer Rhine Ruhr 2025) together with Christoph Edeler (Head of University Sports), Lars Pfeifer (University Athlete of the Year 2018 and World University Triathlon Champion 2018), Nadja Plasberg (student at TU Dortmund University and volunteer at the FISU Games) and David Keefer (student at TU Dortmund University and silver medalist in rowing at the World University Games 2023).
As far as running competitions are concerned, the next highlight is already in the starting blocks: On 26 July, the 10K road race organized by TU Dortmund University as part of the German University Championship will take place at Lake Kemnade in Bochum – a supporting event of the World University Games 2025.
