Overview
How media work and how music appears in media is not only explored theoretically: Understanding how things work goes hand in hand with your own concert introductions or panel discussions, writing program booklet texts, reviews and features. Applied music journalism with a focus on "classical music" in radio, online, print and TV takes place primarily in the multimedia teaching editorial offices of terzwrk, the heart of the program. At the same time, journalistic and musicological seminars analyze products of artistic and cultural practice in historical, gender-related, and present-oriented terms. The proportion of independent study is high in order to promote independent engagement.
A two-month journalistic internship is already included in the Bachelor’s degree program. This allows students to test and implement the skills they have learned at the university in practice ("training on the job"). In addition to deepening research and production skills, students also learn journalistic craft skills (editing technique, layout, etc.). At the same time, teamwork and critical faculties as well as the typical work under high time and success pressure are trained.
Skills and knowledge
Prospective music journalists need both musical knowledge and a recognizable talent for language and journalism. Those who wish to study music journalism and music education at TU Dortmund University have to pass the internal aptitude test. This also applies to applicants who have already passed aptitude test at other locations. Within the framework of this aptitude test, which can be taken at the end of the preceding summer semester, basic knowledge in the following areas must be demonstrated: General listening skills, music theory, listening canon (repertoire) in the written section; instrumental playing, singing, sight-singing in the oral section. Prerequisite for enrollment in the B.A. program is passing both parts and proof of at least a six-week internship in the editorial department of a current media company.
Field of activity
Dortmund music journalists are able to work both in specialized media and in other areas of the music and media business. They are able to report competently, comprehensibly and critically on musical content and forms of expression in all media. They work for magazines and newspapers as well as for television, radio and online publications. In general, the professional spectrum ranges from local cultural reporting to specialist scientific editorial departments. In addition, due to their journalistic and musical training, graduates can be employed in the press and public relations departments of orchestras, opera houses, festivals, artists' agencies, universities, research institutions, interest groups, or in companies in the private sector. Fields of activity in the event-organizing areas of concert presentation and education projects are also possible.
