Overview

The Master’s degree program in Mechanical Engineering at TU Dortmund University is a full-time program lasting three semesters, with the third semester being used exclusively for writing the Master's thesis. The aim is to deepen the specialist knowledge acquired in the bachelor's program and to expand the specialist knowledge and knowledge of methods. Integrated specialized laboratories, project work and the thesis to be written ensure close practical relevance. Students have the choice between seven different profile modules to set appropriate focal points.

The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering also offers students a broad range of studies in the Master’s degree program through numerous profiles. The profiles "Mechanical Engineering", "Production Engineering", "Materials Engineering/Material Testing", "Technical Management" and "Modeling and Simulation in Mechanics" from the Bachelor’s degree program in Mechanical Engineering can be continued in the Master’s degree program in Mechanical Engineering, giving students intensive specialization in the profiles. In addition, the profile "IT in Production and Logistics" is offered exclusively in the Master’s degree program.

The profile in the Master can be chosen independently of the profile taken in the Bachelor. In this way, both specialization and a broad base of competencies are possible. The choice of profile is made by registering for the first profile-specific examination. The profiles offered are also very attractive for bachelor graduates from other universities who wish to qualify in the areas covered by the profiles. The specialization promises a high success rate for applications in the relevant industries.

Skills and knowledge

Prerequisite for admission to the Master’s degree program in Mechanical Engineering is

a) a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the TU Dortmund University of Technology
b) a Bachelor’s degree or another comparable degree in a comparable course of study, provided that the examination board has not identified any significant differences.

In addition, the following specialized scientific contents must be presented:
- 19 LP from the field of mathematics
- 16 LP from the field of mechanics
- 10 LP from the field of production engineering/materials engineering
- 8 LP from the field of thermodynamics/ heat transfer
- 12 LP from the field of technical drawing/ CAD/ machine elements/ construction
- 9 LP from the field of electrical engineering/ measurement technology/ control engineering

Field of activity

Equipped with a broad range of knowledge, engineers are increasingly qualifying for management tasks and leadership functions in industry. Particularly if employment in the context of industrial or university research is desired, studying at a university is highly recommended; for a later doctorate, the university degree or comparable achievements is even a prerequisite. The career opportunities for today's university entrants still could not be better: In recent years, the German labor market has experienced an increasing shortage of well-trained engineers - many vacancies are unfilled.

Additional information

The examination board decides on exceptions and the admission of students with other degrees. In the case of recognition of a course of study deviating from the Dortmund Bachelor’s degree program in Mechanical Engineering, admission may be subject to the condition by the Examination Committee that certain additional study or examination achievements, which are prerequisites for successful study in the Master’s degree program, are proven by the time of registration for the Master’s thesis.
