Dr. Davide Bossini of the research group Experimental Physics VI at TU Dortmund University is an expert in the field of magnetism. He studies how the magnetic properties of materials can be manipulated on an extremely short time scale. This is of interest, for example, for components of information or communications technologies. For his research, Davide Bossini has now been honored by the IEEE Magnetics Society with the Early Career Award.

In the citation explaining the motivation for giving the Early Career Award to Dr. Davide Bossoni, the IEEE Magnetics Society highlights his contributions on the topic of ultrafast spintronics. The Dortmund physicist’s experiments focus on selectively controlling the properties of materials with ultrashort laser pulses. Specifically, the spins of electrons in the material – that is, their intrinsic angular momentum – and the interactions between multiple spins are influenced and manipulated. And when the spins change, so do the properties of the materials. Dr. Bossini has managed, with the help of a laser pulse a few femtoseconds long, to make a material magnetoelectric. In one femtosecond, light travels just one-thousandth of the thickness of a hair. For comparison, light covers the distance between the earth and the moon in one second.

Davide Bossini is able to selectively control the spin of electrons, and thus the magnetic properties of materials as well, on an extremely short time scale. This is especially interesting for storage media that could be made ever smaller, faster, and more energy-efficient with the help of research findings from the field of spintronics.

The IEEE Magnetics Society is a professional organization that promotes the further development of science, technology, applications, and education in the field of magnetism. With the Early Career Award, it recognizes members who are nominated no later than five years after completion of their doctoral work and who already have produced outstanding scientific or technical achievements above and beyond the average performance for a person at this career level.

Dr. Davide Bossini studied physics in Brescia, Italy, and subsequently did his doctoral research in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Upon receiving his PhD, he took a postdoctoral position at the University of Tokyo. Since August 2017, Davide Bossini teaches and conducts research in the group Experimental Physics VI at TU Dortmund University.
