17 Students of the UA Ruhr Take Part in the FISU World University Games

When the FISU World University Games are officially opened on 16 July in the Ruhr Area, many athletes who study at the three universities of the University Alliance Ruhr (UA Ruhr) will march into the stadium as well. They are part of the German “Team Studi,” which will compete for medals in 18 sports during the two-week games. Venues for the international multi-sport event are Duisburg, Essen, Bochum, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Hagen, and Berlin.

UA Ruhr students will compete in six sports at the FISU Games. The largest group is the rowers, with eight participants. Jasper Angl, Julian Garth, Ben Gebauer, Jannik Metzger, Tom Tewes, Moritz Küpper and Mark Hinrichs from Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) have been nominated, as has Julius Kaim from TU Dortmund University. A quartet from the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE)—Jonathan Dresp, Davon Eckerlin, Simon Krax and Kian-Yu Oei—will compete in badminton. RUB students Samira Attermeyer (long jump) and Joyce Oguama (discus) will compete in athletics. Jana Stüwe from TU Dortmund University is nominated for the water polo team. Tennis player Nino Toto and swimmer Simon Reinke, both from RUB, complete the UA Ruhr starting field.

For many of the participants, the FISU Games are not only the sporting highlight of the year, but also a special opportunity to be cheered on almost at their own doorstep by family, friends, and fellow students. Accordingly, water polo player Jana Stüwe, who is taking part in the World University Games for the first time, is particularly looking forward to it: “Internationally, the intensity and quality of play are even higher, and you really learn something new in every match. In addition, the whole event is in our own country and only half an hour from my hometown of Bochum. We’re playing in Duisburg, which means that my family and friends can support me live.”

A total of 305 athletes will compete for the German “Team Studi,” as many as never before at the World University Games. The fact that many Olympic competitors are among them underlines the high sporting level of the events. In addition to the sporting competitions, cultural and scientific events are also part of the FISU Games: from 17 to 19 July, the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World Conference “Competing for Change: Exploring Sustainability and (Mental) Health through Sports” in Bochum will examine key questions about the interrelationships of physical performance, mental health and ecological sustainability. With festivals, concerts and participatory events, the FISU Games also bring an extensive art and culture program to the cities of the Rhine-Ruhr region.
