Last year, Rector Prof. Manfred Bayer (right) reappointed Prof. Andrei S. Markovits as the “Soccer Professor” of TU Dortmund University.
In mid-June, the Men’s European Soccer Championship will kick off in Germany, and with it, a very special seminar at TU Dortmund University: Prof. Andrei S. Markovits, who has been appointed “Professor of Soccer Studies” by TU President Prof. Manfred Bayer for this period, will give seven public lectures starting on 17 June. The topics will range from fandom and women’s soccer to antisemitism in sports. In addition to the lectures, he will watch a match of the German national team with other soccer enthusiasts and speak at the Soccer Culture Festival for EURO 2024 at the German Soccer Museum. The seminar is open to everyone interested. Registration is recommended.

Prof. Andy Markovits from the University of Michigan was already the soccer professor in Dortmund during the “Summer Fairy Tale” World Cup in 2006. For this new edition of his professorship, the Romanian-born and Austrian-raised Markovits will again give lectures, discuss soccer, and comment on games. “We are looking forward to working with this experienced soccer expert,” said Prof. Manfred Bayer on the occasion of the appointment in May 2023. “In Dortmund, a city passionate about soccer, we cant let ourselves miss out on research on the topic either.”

The soccer professor will hold the following lectures from 12:15 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. at the International Meeting Center (IBZ) of TU Dortmund University:
