María Ángeles García Flores, a student at the Department of Statistics, has received this year’s DAAD Prize of TU Dortmund University.

Each year, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) awards the prize for outstanding achievements by international students at German universities. In the framework of the “Come2Campus” welcome event in October, Professor Tessa Flatten, Vice President International Affairs, presented García Flores, who originates from Spain, with the prize, in recognition not only of her academic successes but also her outstanding intercultural commitment.

“Congratulations on your outstanding achievements and exceptional personal development, through which you truly enrich the campus community, both culturally and academically. I am sure that with such commitment you will be very successful in your professional career,” said Professor Flatten in her address. García Flores, 24, has been studying the English-taught Master’s degree program in Data Science at TU Dortmund University since the 2021/22 winter semester, having successfully completed her Bachelor’s degree at the University of Seville, Spain, in 2021.

Commitment to cultural exchange

García Flores is actively involved in a number of different committees and contributing to strengthening intercultural exchange between German and international students. As a member of the Departmental Student Council, she represents the interests of her fellow students and draws attention to the problems and questions that especially concern international students. She is also a student member of the examination board and a member of the public relations committee.

In her acceptance speech during the “Come2Campus” welcome event, García Flores addressed the new international students directly and encouraged them to be open to new things: “Besides studying, there are lots of possibilities at the university to do different things. We have an incredible opportunity at TU Dortmund University to familiarize ourselves with life in Germany, so let’s use it!”
