The international early-career researchers got to know the universities of the UA Ruhr and the region.
This summer semester, international postdocs once again visited the Ruhr area for two weeks as part of the “Research Explorer Ruhr” program, jointly developing strategies to continue their research careers within the University Alliance Ruhr (UA Ruhr). The program is offered annually by the Research Academy Ruhr, the cross-university platform for promoting young researchers.

21 international researchers from 17 countries explored the metropolis of science Ruhr and took part in workshops that provided them with valuable career development insights. The participants were mentored by professors from the UA Ruhr universities who matched their research interests and were introduced to the respective working groups and research environments. The program also served as concrete preparation for returning to TU Dortmund University, Ruhr University Bochum (RUB), or the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) for a longer research stay as postdocs with potential funding.

Two particular highlights were the “Tour de Ruhr” on 23 June and the Global Young Faculty Event on 24 June at RUB. The Research Academy Ruhr invited all advanced doctoral candidates and postdocs interested in international research experience to this event. UA Ruhr professor Alexander Probst from the Research Center One Health Ruhr, who spent several years researching at the University of Berkeley, delivered the keynote on the topic of “International Research Experience as a Career Strategy.” He then discussed the significance of international experiences for a career in science with Prof. Marie Hennecke (RUB, Psychology), JProf. Vahid Farrahi (TU Dortmund University, Sports Science), and Dr. Fatemeh Mamashli (RUB, Medicine).

The “Tour de Ruhr” excursion in cooperation with Ruhr Tourismus GmbH brought the participants closer to the Ruhr area as a research and science location, but also as a culturally exciting and livable region. Stops such as the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex in Essen, the Gasometer in Oberhausen and the Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord provided a comprehensive insight into the history and unique charm of the region.

This year, guests at TU Dortmund University included:

  • Dr. Naomi Alphonsus from South Africa and Krisztina Sitku from Hungary at Prof. Philipp Christian Grollmann (Educational Sciences in the Context of Work and Vocation)
  • Prerna Panda from India at Prof. Susanne Fengler (International Journalism)
  • Joaquín Sticotti from Argentine at Prof. Maximiliane Wilkesmann (Sociology of Work and Organization)

At TU Dortmund University, the program is coordinated by the Graduate Center.
