Young Researchers

A man stands in front of a bookshelf.As an employer of about 2,000 academic staff, TU Dortmund University uses strong, international-level tools to support its young researchers as they embark on their scientific careers. Several graduate schools, including three DFG graduate programs, support PhD candidates, contributing to approximately 250 doctorates that are successfully completed at the university each year. Other excellent career springboards for young researchers are the Collaborative Research Centers (CRCs), research units and priority programs of the German Research Foundation (DFG) as well as individual supervision of doctoral students in all faculties.

Skills Programs for PhD Candidates:

TU Dortmund University offers support programs for its PhD candidates beyond the course programs at their own faculties and graduate schools:

  • Center for Higher Education (zhb): mentoring, language courses (world languages, German as a Second Language for international post-graduate students), teaching skills classes, workshops on soft skills, rhetoric, moderating and project management
  • ScienceCareerNet Ruhr (in German only): Inter-university career development program offered by University Alliance Ruhr (UA Ruhr), including mentoring and coaching, a career forum as well as a spring and fall academy
  • Faculty of Statistics (in German only): The statistical support and analysis center offers assistance in planning and analyzing surveys and experiments
  • University Library: assists with literature searches and provides support for publications or submitting dissertations

 

Cooperation with Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts

Thanks to an agreement, junior researchers at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts (FH Dortmund) have access to PhD programs at TU Dortmund University. The main aim is to improve the opportunities for highly-qualified FH Dortmund graduates to take a doctorate. Both universities are convinced that joining forces to train young scientists and scholars will lead to greater cooperation in research.
