For the fourth time already, the program, which the three UA Ruhr universities (Dortmund, Bochum and Duisburg-Essen) have organized alternately since 2012 in cooperation with companies in the region and sponsors, is taking place this year under the leadership of TU Dortmund University. The aim is to present the Ruhr region as a region with a high quality of life to future professionals and to strengthen international networking.
At the start of the two-month program, TU Dortmund University welcomed the seven participants, who in their home country attend either Yale, Lehigh or Harvard University, at the International Meeting Center. “We’re happy that the Ruhr Fellowship Program can finally take place in person again after a two-year break and that you will have the opportunity over the next two months to get to know the Ruhr region better,” said Professor Tessa Flatten, Vice President International Affairs. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the program was cancelled in 2020 and held in a virtual format in 2021.
Summer school and internship
The eight-week summer program is taking place from 1 June to 31 July and comprises two phases. During the two-week summer school, which includes, among others, a language course and cultural studies lectures by Professor Walter Grünzweig and Dr. Julia Sattler from the field of American Literature and Culture at TU Dortmund University, the Ruhr Fellows should primarily gain cultural and academic impressions of the Ruhr region. Here, the program includes, among others, visits to the Center for Entrepreneurship & Transfer and the Institute of Energy Systems, Energy Efficiency and Energy Economics at TU Dortmund University, Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) and the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE), the ruhrSUMMIT conference as well as the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex and Essen Philharmonic Hall. The American students will then complete a six-week internship at participating organisations. This year, these include KPMG, DEW21, Auslandsgesellschaft.de e. V., Emschergenossenschaft/Lippeverband, the Institute of Energy Systems, Energy Efficiency and Energy Economics at TU Dortmund University, the Center for Logistics and Traffic of the University of Duisburg-Essen, and Westnetz.
Establishing contacts for the future
One objective of the Ruhr Fellowship Program is to establish long-term contacts for research and business partnerships between the Ruhr region and the elite US universities. To this end, the participants are closely integrated into the alumni network of UA Ruhr’s liaison office in New York. Some US scholarship holders return later to the Ruhr region to build their professional future here.
This year’s Ruhr Fellowship Program is funded by the Max Kade Foundation and the Economic Development Agency Dortmund.
