All university members can use AI applications anonymously and free of charge via Campus-AI and Academic Cloud.
In order to make applications of artificial intelligence equally available to all university members, students and employees can now use the Campus AI (“Campus-KI” in German) interface to access ChatGPT-4o anonymously and free of charge. This tool complements services that are available on the platform Academic Cloud. An overview of other AI applications as well as guides on how to interact with AI in a university context are available on the ServicePortal.

As early as April 2023, TU Dortmund University recommended taking a constructive approach to AI in an initial orientation guide on dealing with ChatGPT in academic teaching. Access to ChatGPT via Campus-AI and Academic Cloud will now enable all members of the university to sound out the potential offered by AI applications, experience the limitations of this technology and use the various tools in a responsible manner. The university’s Campus-AI interface, or “Campus-KI” in German, builds on a pilot project by RWTH Aachen University, which is to be rolled out to all North Rhine-Westphalian universities under the name “KI:connect.nrw” in the near future via the collaborative working group “Digitale Hochschule NRW (DH.NRW)”.

Campus AI (“Campus-KI”)

The Campus-AI interface offers users access to two versions of ChatGPT-4o (the “o” stands for “omni”): The mini version and the full version, which is otherwise much more limited or subject to a fee. Both models can process text and images, but they differ in terms of performance and the time needed to generate a result. For both versions, a large number of requests per hour and a quota of tokens are available for Campus-AI users. Current consumption is displayed in the interface. All requests are sent anonymously via the interface to a server in Europe and may not be used for AI training purposes. Nevertheless, users are advised to be cautious and not enter any personal data in AI tools. At no time can TU Dortmund University see users’ requests, and there is no possibility to attribute requests to individual users.

University members can access Campus-AI via the ServicePortal or a direct link. To access the interface, users must log in with their university account via Single Sign-On (SSO).

Academic Cloud

In addition, all members of TU Dortmund University have access to other AI applications via the “Academic Cloud” platform, which is coordinated by the State of Lower Saxony. ChatAI is a service with around ten different non-commercial Large Language Models (LLMs) that – like ChatGPT – can process and generate texts. The platform is hosted by university computer centers in Lower Saxony and compliant with data protection and data security regulations.

Here, too, users can access the service either via the ServicePortal or a direct link. After selecting the university, members of TU Dortmund University log in via “Federated Identity”, also with their login data and Single Sign-On (SSO). The terms of use for Academic Cloud apply.

Other AI tools and resources

Members of TU Dortmund University can find information about other freely accessible AI tools for various applications in the ServicePortal. A “Resource Hub” with a collection of links and videos on using AI in the university context has been set up. This area will be further expanded in the near future to include, for example, information on the legally compliant use of AI in studies and teaching, exams, research and administration. In the event of technical questions or problems, university members can contact the ITMC Service Desk . A new functional mailbox has been set up, to which members can send requests for content-related support. The dial-in details for the digital information session can be found in the ServicePortal.
