TU Dortmund University’s “Strategy for the Digitalization of Study and Teaching” contains measures in four fields of action to meaningfully complement on-site teaching.
Last year, on the initiative of the Vice President Academic Affairs, various members and committees of the university jointly developed the “Strategy for the Digitalization of Study and Teaching at TU Dortmund University”. The paper is now published in the “Digitale Lehre” (Digital Teaching) portal and is intended to encourage critical and constructive engagement with the topic. The strategy is based on the principle that TU Dortmund University continues to understand itself as an university that promotes in-person encounters between teachers and students. At the same time, it wants to experiment with, integrate, and further develop contemporary digital teaching offerings in a pedagogically sound manner.

The strategy outlines goals and measures in four fields of action: (1) Good digital teaching and learning, (2) Diversity and internationalization, (3) Scientific continuing education and lifelong learning, and (4) Artificial Intelligence. In order to ensure the quality of digital teaching, exchange, consulting, and continuing education offers are primarily provided by the Zentrum für HochschulBildung (zhb, Center for Higher Education), the IT and Media Center (ITMC), and the University Library. Digital teaching should be evaluated according to specific criteria. With the consortium project “beVinus,” TU Dortmund University, together with the University of Wuppertal and RWTH Aachen University, sees itself as a pioneer in facilitating the transition from school to university for first-year students through digital self-learning courses.

Learning how to use AI tools

A special focus of the strategy is on Artificial Intelligence, which has its own field of action. Students should learn how to use AI tools across disciplines and attend events on the topic of AI. An important building block for this was laid in mid-January with “Campus-AI” to provide all students and teachers with anonymous and free access to ChatGPT-4o. Assistance on dealing with AI is bundled in the ServicePortal , which also addresses examination-related questions.

The strategy paper also explores the opportunities and challenges that digital teaching offers for both diversity and internationalization. For example, digital teaching can facilitate the compatibility of studies with work or family if the offerings are available asynchronously or in a hybrid format. International lecturers can also be involved through digital formats to present students with diverse perspectives or highly specialized content. To ensure that digital offerings are designed to be accessible, the zhb Division Disability and Study (DoBuS) offers special counseling. The continuing education department at zhb sees potential in digital teaching in the area of “scientific continuing education - lifelong learning.” Digital formats can open up new target groups for continuing education programs, such as teachers or school principals. The offering on digital topics such as AI and data literacy could also be expanded in terms of micro-credentials.

University-wide exchange

Overall, the document comprises around 30 measures. Prof. Wiebke Möhring, Vice President Academic Affairs, explains the process and the purpose behind it: “The strategy paper is the result of university-wide communication and is now the basis for further and ongoing exchange and discussion involving teachers and students.” Leading the creation, alongside the Vice Rectorate Academic Affairs, was the coordinator for digital teaching. “The strategy will help TU Dortmund University and me to further develop digital teaching without replacing the campus as an important place for human interaction,” says Tobias R. Ortelt.

The draft was discussed and advised upon in the Steering Committee “Digital Teaching and Learning (DLL),” in the Senate Commission for Quality in Study and Teaching (SK QSL), and in the Department Conference. The paper takes into account the University Digital Regulation (HDVO) of the State of NRW and the accompanying digitalization guidelines for implementation at TU Dortmund University. The Senate took note of the strategy in November 2024. It was then adopted by the Rectorate shortly before Christmas.
