Vice President International Affairs Prof. Tessa Flatten signed the Memorandum of Understanding with the renowned IIT Bombay.
With a delegation trip to India, TU Dortmund University has further strengthened its internationalization activities. At the end of November, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with the “Indian Institute of Technology Bombay” (IIT Bombay) in Mumbai, one of the leading universities in India. The aim of the agreement is to initiate cooperation in various fields between the two universities and to promote the exchange of students.

The 14-member delegation from TU Dortmund University included researchers and students as well as representatives of the Center for Entrepreneurship & Transfer, and a representative from the International Office. In a diverse program, they were able to exchange ideas with their Indian colleagues. The collaboration in the field of entrepreneurship was particularly in focus: TU students from the Departments of Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, and Business and Economics, who are participating in the interdisciplinary certificate program “Digital Technology Management” as part of the Dlab program, attended a workshop at the Desai Sethi School of Entrepreneurship at IIT Bombay and discussed innovative approaches with researchers and students there. Additionally, there was a joint visit to the startup Atomberg, a company founded in 2018 by an IIT Bombay graduate, specializing in the production of energy-efficient fans and which has since established itself as a market leader on the Indian subcontinent.

Facilitating Exchange of Students and Doctoral Candidates

Prof. Tessa Flatten, Vice President International Affairs, signed the MoU together with Prof. Milind Atrey, Deputy Director at IIT Bombay. The goal is to expand scientific cooperation across all disciplines between the two institutions and to facilitate the exchange of students and doctoral candidates. Another part of the trip took the delegation to the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in Mumbai, where the focus was on social innovation.

The delegation trip underlines the strategic goal of TU Dortmund University to further expand its relationships with Indian partners and attract young talent from India for student exchange or full-time study in Dortmund. The number of students of Indian origin at TU Dortmund University has more than tripled in recent years; they now form the largest group of international students seeking a degree here. In the winter semester 2023/24, 391 students of Indian origin were enrolled at TU Dortmund University, compared to 124 five years ago. So far, TU students mainly go to India for internships or summer schools. The new agreement with IIT Bombay is intended to enable students of both universities to spend semesters and years at each other's institutions in the future. A similar student exchange cooperation already exists with the "Indian Institute of Technology Madras."

There are also numerous opportunities for collaboration with Indian partners in research. In this context, the delegation gathered information from meetings with representatives of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) about funding and financing options for joint projects with partners from India, details of which are also available on the DFG website.
