Overview

The four-semester M.A. in Cultural Analysis and Cultural Intermediation is characterized by the interdisciplinary interlinking of the following subjects: Cultural Anthropology of Textiles, Art History, Musicology and the corresponding communication sciences. The aim of the Master’s degree program is to view culture as a holistic constellation and to understand its complexity.

At the center of attention are both cultural heritage and creative manifestations of the ‘high arts’ (fashion design, architecture, visual art, serious music) and materializations of everyday spheres of life (popular culture). The combination of academic and didactic approaches empowers students to present science and knowledge, along with the latter’s generation and transfer, in a commensurate manner and to communicate them to the general public.

In the interdisciplinary and compulsory part of the program, students study together and complete courses in Cultural Anthropology of Fashion and Cultural Anthropology of Textiles, and choose between Art History/Visual Studies or Musicology. In the mandatory electives, they attend project courses in Cultural Anthropology of Fashion and Cultural Anthropology of Textiles.

The interdisciplinary interlinking of Cultural Anthropology of Textiles, Art History, and Musicology as well as of the corresponding communication sciences in this manner can only be found at TU Dortmund University and opens up new opportunities, professional prospects and research fields for students, especially through the proximity to the practice-oriented study programs.

Skills and knowledge

Applicants are admitted to the program who hold a good to very good Bachelor’s degree (2.5 or higher) in the area of cultural anthropology of textiles, art studies, musicology, textile design or another related and equivalent program. These can be found in the individual profiles.
