Overview
Taught, among others, are mathematical and mechanical fundamentals, the principles of support structure planning, support structures and material-specific dimensioning in the framework of what is referred to as the “Dortmunder Modell Bauwesen”. Within this interdisciplinary educational concept, in particular in the framework of project work, students already learn during their studies about professional practice and cooperation between architects and civil engineers. This fosters team and social skills.
This model is unique in Germany and embodies a teaching concept which aims – in addition to giving them a thorough grounding in their subject – to teach students how to work together in an interdisciplinary team with the other stakeholders involved. The projects, on which a group of both Architecture as well as Civil Engineering students work together, play a key role here. In this way, realistic planning tasks form the basis for later successful teamwork in practice.
Skills and knowledge
Apart from a general higher education entrance qualification and a good general education, future civil engineers should enjoy and be interested in design and dimensioning and especially bring with them a creative and holistic way of thinking. Creativity, imagination, good observation skills, spatial perception, technical and constructional understanding, the ability to work in a team and to interlink different and complex elements are essential, as well as a strong sense of responsibility and resilience.
In order to prepare for the program and refresh their mathematical skills, it is strongly recommended that students attend the preliminary math course at TU Dortmund University.
Field of activity
The professional opportunities for civil engineers are highly diversified: Apart from typical planning tasks in an engineering office, there are many other openings for graduates, e.g., as real estate experts or in construction companies, housing corporations, project development/management or public administration. The close dovetailing with architecture within the “Dortmunder Modell Bauwesen” means that graduates of the Civil Engineering program have received thorough interdisciplinary training which makes them particularly well prepared for the reality of the employment market.
The Bachelor’s degree gives graduates a first professional qualification and also allows them to pursue advanced studies in the shape of a Master’s degree program, such as the M.Sc. in Civil Engineering or the M.Sc. in Construction Management and Real Estate Management at TU Dortmund University.
Additional information
A four-week (120 hours) internship in the construction sector is compulsory. It is recommended that students complete the internship before commencing their studies, but it is also possible after the start of the program.
