The participants and organizers of the International Summer Program convene at the International Meeting Center (IBZ) of TU Dortmund University on the first day.
The International Summer Program (ISP), which enables international students to attend courses in Entrepreneurship, Engineering or German & European Studies during the summer semester, has taken place at TU Dortmund University for 20 years. Seventeen students are guests at TU Dortmund University in the 2023 summer semester. On 26 May, Professor Walter Grünzweig from the Department of Cultural Studies and Miriam Gothe from the International Office welcomed the participants.

While the summer programs of other universities take place during the semester break, the International Summer Program (ISP) for international students at TU Dortmund University already starts at the end of May. Even though a summer program while the semester is still ongoing might seem unusual, this is exactly what makes the ISP special, explained Professor Walter Grünzweig in his welcome address: “The ISP is a program that builds on dialogue and cooperation.” This is precisely the reason why it is important, he said, for the international students also to familiarize themselves with everyday university life and to meet the students at TU Dortmund University.

Professor Grünzweig also highlighted the significance of international exchange programs, which were launched after the Second World War to establish relations and trust between different nations. “In view of the current international situation, I think it is particularly important to meet and exchange views and ideas in person.” After the welcome addresses by Professor Grünzweig and Miriam Gothe from the International Office, there was a tour of the campus and a joint Welcome BBQ, among other things, for the international students so that they could get to know TU Dortmund University better, as well as each other.

Subject-specific courses and German lessons

A total of 17 students are taking part in the ISP this year. Most of them are from the partner universities in the US, but students from China, the United Kingdom and Brazil are also studying at TU Dortmund University during this summer semester. Within the program, participants can choose one of three specializations: Engineering, German & European Studies or Entrepreneurship. Apart from their subject-specific courses, the students also attend the regional and cultural studies course “Germany – Politics, Culture and Society” and a German course to improve their language skills.

“I’m very much looking forward to the German course,” says Vinicius Azevedo, one of the 17 participants. He is studying chemical engineering in São Paulo and is the only ISP participant from Brazil this year. Azevedo learned about the summer program from his lecturer, who himself completed his doctoral degree at TU Dortmund University and RWTH Aachen University. His first impression of TU Dortmund University is positive: “It has a beautiful campus with lots of green spaces, unlike my university in Brazil.”

About the International Summer Program (ISP)

The ISP is taking place for the 20th time this year and is intended for students from TU Dortmund University’s partner universities. In return, students from Dortmund can study at the participating partner universities abroad free of charge. Alongside subject-specific courses or participation in a research project, participants are also supported by the Dortmund Doubles buddy program. Outside the university, the international students can expect a wide-ranging program of recreational activities and excursions to get to know the Ruhr region as a nice place to live. On the academic side, the ISP is organized by the Department of Biochemical and Chemical Engineering, the Department of Cultural Studies, and the Center for Entrepreneurship & Transfer (CET); the International Office provides administrative assistance.
