A degree in computer science after graduating from high school – or maybe economics after all? A new program at TU Dortmund University is geared to all those interested in the fascinating interfaces between these two subjects. The B.Sc. in Information Systems will start in the 2024/2025 winter semester, the consecutive Master’s program will follow a year later.

In times of rapid technological transformation, professionals are greatly in demand who understand not only the technical aspects but also the economic implications of new technologies and are able to use them to good advantage. This is exactly where the new Information Systems degree program at TU Dortmund University comes in: “Information Systems trains students to design IT systems for practical use in business and society,” says Professor Christian Janiesch, Professor of Enterprise Computing at the Department of Computer Science and one of the program’s initiators. “They can learn, for example, how to design innovative applications using AI and how to successfully integrate AI into corporate processes.” His colleague Professor Manuel Wiesche from the Department of Business and Economics adds: “Studying Information Systems enables students to understand the digital transformation and empowers them to harness its economic and social potential, for example to rethink corporate processes from top to bottom or to develop innovative digital business models.”

New program teaches fundamentals of both subjects

Students learn the basics of software engineering, machine learning and business information systems. In parallel, they learn important economics principles. At the interface between the two subjects, the focus lies on the socio-technical design of information systems, which must take the complex interrelationships between humans, tasks and technologies into account. The program covers three main thematic areas: Data Management & Applied Artificial Intelligence, Business Engineering & Process Automation, and Digital Transformation in Business and Society. It also includes projects and questions related to practice: The purpose of collaborations with companies such as DB Schenker, adesso SE and Evonik Industries AG, for example, is to prepare students for the labor market.

The accreditation of the degree programs is expected to be completed shortly. Enrollment for the B.Sc. in Information Systems is already possible.
