On the occasion of the German Diversity Day on 27 May, TU Dortmund University is once again hosting an extensive program of events that will explore various aspects of diversity throughout the entire month of May. These events include lectures, exhibitions, and discussion roundtables that cover topics such as sexism, abuse of power, hate speech, anti-discrimination, and gender diversity.

“The goal of the Diversity Month is to spotlight diversity issues and make visible the activities of the many contributors at TU Dortmund University who work every day to foster awareness of diversity and inclusion in the academic world,” says Dr. Ute Zimmermann, Head of the Staff Unit Equal Opportunities, Family and Diversity. Many of these events are not one-off special occasions but are well-established formats for exchange and information that regularly take place at TU Dortmund University, such as the Language Café of the International Office or the Diversity Talks of the Queer*Peers network.

Highlights: exhibition and lecture

Two notable highlights of this year’s Diversity Month in May are the exhibition “Together Against Sexism” and the lecture “How Hate Speech Endangers Democracies and What We Can Do About It.” The poster series by the “Together Against Sexism” alliance provides clear and accessible information on the subject of sexism. Visitors have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and reflect on their own behavior. The exhibition focuses on everyday sexism, sexism in the workplace and in public spaces, as well as in culture and media. Additionally, the posters offer tips, provide information on effective measures against sexism, and address the topic of intersectionality.

Members of TU Dortmund University can view the exhibition and join discussions about it at the following locations: from 30 April to 14 May in the foyer of the Mechanical Engineering I Building (Leonhard-Euler-Str. 5) and from 15 May to 31 May in the foyer of the Department of Computer Science (Otto-Hahn-Str. 14). The exhibition is in German and is also available as an audio guide via QR code. It can be visited during the building’s opening hours and is free of charge. The “Together Against Sexism” exhibition is an initiative of the “Together Against Sexism” alliance and is sponsored by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women, and Youth.

On 27 May – the German Diversity Day, journalist, physician, and political scientist Gilda Sahebi will deliver a keynote speech. In view of current global developments, the focus is on hate speech. In her lecture, Gilda Sahebi will discuss how hate speech endangers democracies and how it can be countered. Afterwards, there will be an opportunity to exchange ideas with Gilda Sahebi and other participants. In good weather, the event will take place at Martin-Schmeißer-Platz; in bad weather, it will be held in Lecture Hall II at Emil-Figge-Str. 50.

No registration is required. The event is based on an awareness concept designed to support a constructive and low-discrimination framework. For all those who cannot attend in person, the Queer*Peers will offer an online diversity talk titled “Dealing with Digital Violence and Hate Speech” on 13 May from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., in collaboration with Scicomm-Support. Registration is not required for this either.

Also in May, the “Forum Abuse of Power at TU Dortmund University – continued” will take place, where students and employees can learn about counseling services and complaint options at the university via Zoom (anonymously if desired), as well as the “Sustainability Week” organized by TU Dortmund University’s Sustainability Office and AStA (General Student Committee).
