On 29 April in Düsseldorf, the Ministry of Culture and Science (MKW) North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) announced that Fachhochschule Dortmund is one of two additional institutions included in the New Master Plan for University Construction. The University of Applied Science and Arts aims to consolidate its current three locations on the campus along Emil-Figge-Straße. Directly neighboring TU Dortmund University, this campus already hosts the four departments of Applied Social Sciences, Architecture, Computer Science, and Business. Two other sites are still located in Dortmund’s Kreuzviertel on Sonnenstraße and at Max-Ophüls-Platz. TU President Manfred Bayer welcomed the decision.

With the New Master Plan, the MKW intends to accelerate planning and construction procedures for universities. The guiding principle is that measures in a standardized process are prioritized based on urgency, financial feasibility, and implementability, so that planning is no longer done merely for filing purposes. In this process, the universities and the MKW work closely with the Ministry of Finance and the Building and Real Estate Management NRW (BLB NRW). In a pilot phase, three universities initially tested the New Master Plan for one year. Now, with the addition of FH Dortmund and RWTH Aachen University, two more have joined. Ultimately, the expectation is that all universities in the state – including TU Dortmund University – will adopt this procedure.

New Collaborations through an Expanding Neighborhood

Fachhochschule Dortmund had previously developed an extensive plan to modernize its building infrastructure. It became evident that the existing structures in the Kreuzviertel cannot be renovated according to current needs.

A new building on available development sites within the city was also ruled out, so the decision now is to pursue a single-location solution along Emil-Figge-Straße. Prof. Tamara Appel, President of Fachhochschule Dortmund, explained: “In view of our distribution and accommodation challenges, we are strategically aiming for a single-location solution. Our goal is to create modern and attractive learning facilities, foster interdisciplinary networking over short distances, and address cross-cutting themes related to current societal challenges. This approach not only generates synergies in terms of space requirements but also proves to be sustainable and resource-efficient. The campus, with its proximity to TU Dortmund University and the Technology Center, provides the ideal conditions for collaborative exchange in research and knowledge transfer.”

TU Dortmund University’s President, Prof. Manfred Bayer, also highlighted the opportunities arising from the expanding neighborhood: “For the further development of the Dortmund higher education sector, it will be a great advantage if the University of Applied Sciences and the TU are consolidated on one campus to leverage the potential of close cooperation. Joint projects in research, teaching, and transfer could also be developed.”
