European Physical Society Honors Prof. Doris Reiter

Prof. Doris Reiter receives the Emmy Noether Award for her outstanding research and science communication.
The European Physical Society (EPS) has bestowed this year’s Emmy Noether Award in the “mid-career” category to Adjunct Professor Doris Reiter of the Department of Physics of TU Dortmund University. The professional society acknowledges her research in the fields of photonics and quantum technology as well as her international contributions to science communication.

Since 2013, the EPS has annually honored two female physicists with the Emmy Noether Award – recognizing outstanding achievements in research, teaching, and science communication while serving as role models to inspire women to pursue careers in science. For instance, in 2014 the award was presented to the French–Swedish physicist Professor Anne L’Huillier, who was later honored with the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2023. This year, the EPS jury commends Professor Doris Reiter “for her groundbreaking contributions to theoretical photonics and quantum technology, her transformative leadership, and her innovative public outreach, as exemplified by the SUPER scheme and the QuanTour project.”

Doris Reiter has been at TU Dortmund University since 2022, leading an independent research group in theoretical condensed matter physics as an adjunct professor. One of her main research focuses is the theoretical description of generating high-quality photons required for quantum communication. Her work on the so-called SUPER scheme details an innovative excitation method in which two laser pulses interact in a targeted manner to significantly boost the photon yield and reduce disruptive environmental influences. This scheme has been embraced internationally and has opened up a new field of research in both theory and experiment.

In addition, Professor Reiter is deeply committed to fostering emerging scientific talent and to science communication. At the Department of Physics, she heads the Dortmund Graduate School of Physics, and she has been actively involved with the German Physical Society (DPG, Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft) for many years. In the framework of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology 2025, she initiated the outreach project “QuanTour“, in which a quantum light source travels across Europe. The project has been featured in several international media outlets. With the recognition awarded to Professor Reiter, the visibility of physics research at TU Dortmund University is strengthened on an international level.
