Around 30 trainees graduate from TU Dortmund University every year – one of them is Jana Witt. In 2023, she completed her training as a media designer for image and sound at the Institute of Journalism with the grade “very good”. Both at the state and national levels, she was honored by the IHK (Chamber of Industry and Commerce) as one of the best in her field for this achievement.

Even as a child, Jana Witt enjoyed making her own films. Therefore, the career choice was clear for her: She wanted to become a media designer for image and sound. Based on recommendations from other trainees, she chose TU Dortmund University as her training company – and is still satisfied with her choice today. “In retrospect, I can recommend the training to everyone because you can really try everything,” says Jana Witt. “It was diverse because I learned a lot of different things – camera, sound, light, post-production, studio, and much more.”

This diversity of the training at NRWision is a special feature, as NRWision is both a TV learning channel and a citizen media platform affiliated with the Institute of Journalism at TU Dortmund University. The trainees in the field of media design for image and sound not only learn to produce their own television and radio contributions but also collaborate with journalism students in the TV Training Newsroom KURT. This cooperation between trainees and students was something special about Jana Witt’s training. “You always meet new people and shoot in different places,” says the graduate.

However, the training also posed challenges for her: “I am often a spontaneous problem solver, for example, when something is not working with the camera. Then I have to quickly find a solution – which usually works well.” During her apprenticeship, Jana Witt was not only able to demonstrate her creativity as a problem solver, but, above all, she showed that she is a capable media designer. With the grade “very good,” she is one of the best graduates in her field at both the state and national levels.

Honor in Aachen and Berlin

On 3 November, Jana Witt was honored in Aachen for the outstanding completion of her training by all 16 Chambers of Industry and Commerce in North Rhine-Westphalia as one of the best trainees in the state. On 11 December, she was additionally recognized in Berlin by the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (DIHK) alongside other new professionals at the national best honors ceremony as one of the best graduates at the federal level. This double recognition came as a surprise to Jana Witt. “I did not expect it, but of course, I'm happy,” says the media designer.

In November, TU Dortmund University also congratulated Jana Witt for her excellent performance, which she not only demonstrated in her final project on wheelchair basketball but also in numerous projects during her training. Although she has completed her training at NRWision, she has decided to continue working at TU Dortmund University.
