As a member of the Rectorate, the Chancellor heads the university administration.

The position of Chancellor at TU Dortmund University has been publicly advertised. As a member of the Rectorate, he or she is responsible for budget management and university administration. The new member of the top management will be elected for a term of office of eight years by the University Elective Assembly.

A ten-member search committee for the successor to the Chancellor, consisting of five members of the Senate and five members of the University Council, was already elected at the end of 2023. In recent weeks, it has drawn up a job advertisement. This was approved by the University Elective Assembly on 26 January and has now been published. The university is looking for a person who has several years of experience in managing larger administrative units and is familiar with the academic system. Interested candidates can apply until 26 February.

It is also the task of the selection committee to evaluate the applications received. It also has the opportunity to invite candidates to apply. The selected candidates will then present themselves – in June at the earliest – to the University Elective Assembly, which is responsible for electing the top management. The 27 voting members of the Senate and the eight members of the University Council are entitled to vote in the University Elective Assembly, with the votes of the Senate and University Council counting equally. Through the Senate, representatives of all four status groups of the university are involved in the election of the new Chancellor: university teachers, academic staff, technical and administrative staff and students.

The previous incumbent, Albrecht Ehlers, retired on 1 December 2023 when he reached the age limit – after 14 years in office. Until a successor is appointed, the Vice President Finance, Prof. Gerhard Schembecker, will assume responsibility for the division. Albrecht Ehlers was the fifth Chancellor of TU Dortmund University.
