Prof. Jian-Jia Chen from the Faculty of Computer Science at TU Dortmund University received the ERC Consolidator Grant.

The European Research Council (ERC) has awarded Jian-Jia Chen, professor at the Faculty of Computer Science of TU Dortmund University, the coveted ERC Consolidator Grant. This grant is worth almost € 2 million.

Professor Chen is getting support from Brussels for his project “PropRT - Property-Based Modulable Timing Analysis and Optimization for Complex Cyber-Physical Real-Time Systems” – something he is very pleased about: “I see it as a great honor that the European Research Council has acknowledged my work in the shape of an ERC Consolidator Grant,” he says.

His project will deliver a comprehensive overview of potential design, analysis and optimization alternatives for timing properties in cyber-physical real-time systems.  Cyber-physical real-time systems are information processing systems that require both functional as well as timing correctness and have interactions with the physical world. Since time naturally progresses in the physical world, safe bounds of deterministic or probabilistic timing properties are required. PropRT will explore the possibilities to construct timing analysis for complex cyber-physical real-time systems from formal properties. The target properties should be modular so that safe and tight analysis as well as optimization can be performed almost automatically. The results can serve as building blocks for the design of predictable cyber-physical systems which could trigger a revolution in computer architectures and communication mechanisms in the near future.

About the European Research Council:

The European Research Council, founded by the European Commission, is an institution that finances basic research. The current research framework program, Horizon 2020, was launched in 2014. The ERC Consolidator Grant is intended for established top-class researchers who have already produced outstanding research work. The grant lasts five years and funding generally amounts to up to € 2 million.

Professor Chen:

Professor Jian-Jia Chen has been professor at the Faculty of Computer Science of TU Dortmund University since April 2014. He was previously junior professor at the Department of Informatics of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) from 2010 to 2014, a post preceded by stages at ETH Zurich from 2008 to 2010, the Fisheries Agency, Council of Agriculture/Taiwan, from 2006 to 2007, and the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering at the National Taiwan University from 2002 to 2006, where Chen earned his doctoral degree.
