Overview

Securing a sustainable energy future requires an energy transition that calls for a new generation of dedicated engineers and researchers capable of developing, optimizing and integrating sustainable energy sources such as solar energy, wind energy and energy from biomass.
Since these energy sources are only available on an irregular basis, energy storage is a key success factor. This requires innovative batteries and the integration of hydrogen as an energy carrier. These and other new technologies must be integrated into existing power grids and market structures. The design of new forms of energy distribution, energy market structures and smart grids is necessary to sustainably meet the energy needs of modern societies.

Skills and knowledge

Good to very good knowledge of physics and mathematics is just as important for everyday engineering as logical thinking and a willingness to tackle complex tasks. A good understanding in the field of computer science can also be important. It is therefore recommended that students register especially for the preliminary mathematics course and, if they have little experience in this area, also for the preliminary computer science course.

There are no special admission requirements. However, first-year students should bring along an interest in technical challenges. In contrast to school, (engineering) studies require independent learning and tinkering. In addition to technical understanding, this includes the ability to acquire new knowledge independently. If you approach your studies with the willingness to learn new things and to face even difficult challenges with motivation, the Sustainable Energy Systems degree program is certainly the right choice for you.

Field of activity

Engineers for sustainable energy systems have a broad knowledge in this field and can act as system integrators of the energy transition. They are able to combine different energy subsystems into one system. Their technical skills include renewable energy generation, distribution systems, storage as well as digitalization. They can integrate systems that can manage fluctuating energy supply and demand. Furthermore, they are aware of the challenges of the energy market as well as innovation management and are familiar with central aspects of the principle of action sustainability.

Additional information

With the four-semester, English-language Master’s degree program Sustainable Energy Systems, which can also be completed at the department, the chances of an exciting and well-paid professional job increase.
An industrial internship must be completed during the Master’s degree program.
