Overview

The Master’s degree program in mathematics prepares students professionally for challenging jobs in business and industry or in the public sector. Graduates are able to develop and implement procedures for solving practical problems using mathematical methods and taking into account economic requirements. Furthermore, the Master’s degree program is the prerequisite for a doctorate in mathematics or in an applied subject.

The course of the Master’s degree program is characterized by a significantly increased freedom of choice compared to the Bachelor's program. In three semesters, lectures and seminars in pure and applied mathematics are taken. In the mathematics program, a minor subject related to mathematics is taken; in the Master’s degree program, the minor subject is continued by completing advanced modules from the respective subject.

A master's thesis (6 months) is completed in the fourth semester.

Skills and knowledge

The admission requirement for the Master’s degree program in mathematics is a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics or technomathematics with a grade point average of 3.0 or better or a comparable degree in a program of at least six semesters. Comparability is generally given if achievements from the field of mathematics to the extent of 100 credit points and from one of the minor fields of construction mechanics & statics, chemistry, electrical engineering and information technology, computer science, physics, statistics, technical mechanics, economics to the extent of 20 credit points have been acquired.

Field of activity

The occupational field of mathematicians is largely independent of industry and is constantly expanding. The focus is on the service sector in the IT, credit, insurance and financial services industries, management consultancies, the public sector, universities and research institutes. Increasingly, companies in areas such as medicine, chemistry, logistics and manufacturing are also hiring mathematicians.

The professional practice of mathematicians requires the ability to structure tasks arising in a wide variety of areas, translate them into mathematical problems (modeling, mathematization), solve them mathematically or numerically, and finally translate and interpret the solution back into the language of the user.

Due to the broad fields of application, the career prospects are very good.
