NC procedure for the 1st semester

Overview

A number of degree programs/subjects at the TU Dortmund are subject to admission restrictions. An application is required for these so-called NC degree programs. The term Numerus Clausus (NC) stands for "limited number" and means that no more applicants can be admitted to a degree program than there are places available. A separate allocation procedure is carried out for each degree program/subject with restricted admission.

CURRENT INFORMATION ON THE STATUS OF THE CURRENT ADMISSION PROCEDURE

The Orts NC procedure at a glance:

After the application deadline, all study places are allocated in the main procedure or the admission and rejection notices are made available for download. You will receive information by e-mail as soon as the admission and rejection notices are available for download. The admission notice contains an acceptance deadline by which you must complete online enrollment including document upload. If you do not complete the online enrollment and the document upload within the deadline, you will forfeit your right to the place and the place will be awarded to another applicant in a move-up procedure. The main procedure ends with the expiration of the acceptance period. Any places that have not been accepted will then be awarded in the backlog procedure.

Important: Subsequent uploading of the enrollment documents - after the deadline stated in the notification of admission - is not possible!

Experience shows that not all applicants in the main procedure accept the assigned study place. If there are still places to be allocated after the main procedure has been completed, these places will be allocated at the TU Dortmund in a move-up procedure. Sometimes there can be more than one backward procedure. If you were initially unable to gain admission in the main procedure or in a subsequent procedure and would like to continue to participate in the allocation procedure, you must actively declare this in each case subsequently within a specified time window. You will be informed of the time window in the rejection notice and by e-mail after the main procedure or the move-up procedure. If you do not submit this declaration or do not submit it in time, you will be definitively and irrevocably excluded from the further award procedure.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to predict how many places will be available for the subsequent procedure. You can follow the time periods for the provision of the notifications and the respective declaration of participation in the subsequent move-up procedure on our website. Admission in the move-up procedure can take place very late, sometimes only at the beginning of the current lecture period. There will be move-up procedures as long as there are free study places and applicants.

If there are still places available after the main procedure and the subsequent procedures - i.e. all applicants have been offered a place and the acceptance deadline has expired - a lottery procedure will be carried out. All prospective students can participate in this procedure, regardless of whether they have previously taken part in the application procedure. Similar to a lottery, the study places are drawn by lot among all participants. This means that the Abitur grade does not play a role.

The TU Dortmund University participates with the admission-restricted 1-subject Bachelor's programs in the so-called DoSV of the Foundation for University Admission (Hochschulstart) for the 1st semester. Hochschulstart coordinates the allocation of study places at the participating universities.

Please register first on the website of Hochschulstart. There you will receive an applicant ID (BID) and an applicant authentication number (BAN). You will need this data for the further application process in the campus portal of the TU Dortmund University.

Study places are allocated according to the rules of the DoSV. Information on the procedure and the individual phases can be found on Hochschulstart. If an offer of admission has been made to you and you have accepted it, you will receive an e-mail from TU Dortmund University within a maximum of 5 days with further information on the enrollment deadlines and the enrollment process.

More detailed explanations and information on the Orts NC procedure

The available study places of the 1st semester are mainly distributed according to the Abitur grade (HZB / 20%) and the university's own selection criteria (80%) - to German applicants and foreign applicants who are equal to German applicants. In this university's own selection procedure, the Abitur grade is improved by 0.1 per semester of waiting time, whereby a maximum of up to seven waiting semesters can be taken into account. All semesters after obtaining your Abitur in which you were not enrolled at a German university are recognized as waiting periods.

In particular, German applicants are considered equal to:

  • foreign EU citizens
  • foreign applicants from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway (contracting states of the European Economic Area)
  • German nationals (foreign nationals with German Abitur (HZB))

Please refer to the information and notes on the website of the International Office.

  • In the two quotas, the average grade and the university's own criteria, ranking lists are created; each application is considered in both quotas.
  • As soon as a study place can be allocated in one of the two quotas, the applicant receives an admission and is removed from the ranking lists of the other quota.
  • Applicants will only receive a rejection if they were unable to obtain a place in either of the quotas.
  • Each applicant is considered on the ranking list according to average grade as well as on the ranking list for the selection procedure of the university. In the case of the same Abitur grade, the exact ranking is decided by subordinate criteria, i.e. service rendered and then by lot.

The award regulation provides for special quotas for the following groups of persons:

  • Foreigners (who do not have the same status as German applicants)
  • underage applicants
  • applicants qualified in vocational training
  • hardship cases, second degree applicants
  • Preferentially admitted applicants

If you are still underage by the time lectures begin and you live with your parents in one of the districts or independent cities of Bochum, Dortmund, Hagen, Ennepe-Ruhr Kreis, Recklinghausen or Unna, you can improve your chances of getting a place at university.

The following regulations apply to all applicants who would like to enroll or change their enrollment in a teacher training program at TU Dortmund University for the first time. Applicants who have passed an aptitude test at TU Dortmund University or a recognized aptitude test of other universities in the teaching subjects art, music or physical education can receive an improvement of the average grade of the university entrance qualification, usually the Abitur, by submitting the corresponding proof until the application deadline. This improvement applies to all applications to restricted-admission majors (including education majors) required to complete the program combination. Applications for single degree programs are excluded from this option; the regulations apply exclusively to a first-time teacher training program. The certificates of aptitude issued by the TU Dortmund University are valid for five years from the date of issue for the subject Art and three years each for the subjects Music and Physical Education.

The improvement in the individual subjects is as follows:

Subject Sports Science/ Physical Education

For the school types "Lehramt an Gymnasien und Gesamtschulen" and "HRSGe" there is no improvement of the grade by passing the qualifying examination. For the school types teaching at elementary schools, special schools and vocational colleges, the average grade of the university entrance qualification is improved by 0.7.

Subject Art Sciences/ Art

For the school types "Lehramt an Gymnasien und Gesamtschulen" and "HRSGe", the grade is not improved by passing the qualifying examination. For the school types teaching at elementary school, special schools and vocational colleges, the average grade of the university entrance qualification is improved by the value 0.7.

Subject Musicology/ Music

The average grade of the university entrance qualification improves for all school types by the value 1.0.

The Numerus clausus are not determined before the procedure! They are the result of the competition between applicants for the scarce study places and are formed anew every year. For this reason, the results of past allocation procedures always have only limited predictive power. They are only indicative values and not values that one would have to achieve in order to be admitted in the future. The values for the last three winter semesters can be found here:PDF NC selection limits.

Completed service is taken into account in the award procedure as a subordinate selection criterion - if the grade is the same. Length of service is considered as a waiting period in the university's own selection process.

Service is considered to be:

  • military or civilian service in accordance with Art. 12a of the German Basic Law or service on the basis of a temporary obligation for a period of up to 3 years
  • voluntary military service in accordance with the German Military Service Act (Wehrpflichtgesetz)
  • a federal voluntary service according to the law about the federal voluntary service
  • a voluntary social or ecological year, or youth voluntary service
  • a development service of at least one year in accordance with the Development Workers Act
  • a care or nursing of a bodily/adopted child under the age of 18 or of another relative in need of care up to the duration of 3 years, but at least 6 months.

Please note:

Other social or humanitarian services, au-pair stays or internships cannot normally be recognized as service under procurement law. Foreign service (e.g. military or civilian service abroad) will be considered if it is equivalent to German service.

The sponsors for the FSJ and FÖJ must be recognized under the "Act on the Promotion of a Voluntary Social Year" or under the "Act on the Promotion of an Ecological Year" or under the "Act on the Promotion of Youth Volunteer Service".

A completed service is indicated on the application. Only for enrollment (in case of admission) the service has to be proven by submitting documents. These are, for example, the certificate of service for the completed military/civilian service or the certificate of the sponsor of the completed voluntary social year.

Case group 1:

Applicants who received the desired study place at the TU Dortmund at the beginning of or during their service cannot accept it at first, because the completion of the service prevents the immediate start of studies at the TU Dortmund. These applicants have a right to be re-selected on the basis of the previous admission notice of the TU Dortmund University before all other applicants until the 2nd allocation procedure (= usually 2 years later) of the TU Dortmund University after the end of service. Afterwards, the claim expires.

The renewed selection before all other applicants is not granted automatically. This requires a renewed application to the TU Dortmund in due form and time, in which the renewed/preferred selection is applied for and proven. As a rule, this is done by submitting the certificate of service and the previous admission notice of the TU Dortmund University for application.

Case group 2:

Applicants who were not able to start an admission-free study program at the beginning of or during their service, because the completion of their service prevented them from immediately starting their studies at the TU Dortmund, are entitled to preferential admission until the 2nd award procedure (= usually 2 years later) of the TU Dortmund after the end of their service. After that, the claim expires.

Selection before all other applicants* is not granted automatically. This requires an application to the TU Dortmund in due form and time, in which the preferred selection is applied for and proven. As a rule, this is done by submitting the certificate of service.

Case group 3:

Applicants who belong to an Olympic, perspective, supplementary, team sport or junior squad (formerly A, B, C or D/C squad) of a national professional association of the German Olympic Sports Confederation will be admitted with priority. This priority is not granted automatically. For this, an application in due form and time to the TU Dortmund is required, in which the preferred selection is applied for and proven. As a rule, this is done by submitting the certificate of membership in the national squad of the German Olympic Training Center.

Applicants have the option of submitting a hardship application and/or an application for disadvantage compensation. These applications can only be granted under very narrow conditions. You can find detailed information and information about the required proof on the homepage of the Foundation for University Admission.

Please refer to the information and notes on the web pages of the International Office.

An exchange of study places can only be applied for in a study program with the same name or, if applicable, in study subjects with the same name and in an identical semester together with students from another university. An exchange of study places in different study programs, such as Bachelor Mechanical Engineering and Bachelor Civil Engineering, is not possible either internally at TU Dortmund University or with students from other universities. An exchange of study places requires that both universities declare their consent.
