Overview

The Master’s program “Mechanics of Sustainable Materials and Structures” is a multiple-degree diploma offered through joint training activities by the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering of TU Dortmund University (Germany), the Department of Civil, Environmental and Mechanical Engineering of the University of Trento (Italy) and the Department of Mechanics, Materials and Civil Engineering of the Ecole Centrale de Nantes (France).

The following degrees are awarded:
- Master of Science (M.Sc.) from TU Dortmund
- Laurea Magistrale in Ingegneria Civile (class LM 23) from the University of Trento
- Master sciences, technologies, santé, mention genie civil / Civil engineering from Centrale Nantes

Skills and knowledge

The admission requirements are regulated in the examination regulations §3 of this degree program. Students’ admission and enrollment will comply with the following requirements: a first-cycle degree qualification according to the European Qualifications Framework or an equivalent degree qualification in the field of Civil Engineering. This equivalence requires an examination of equivalence by the program’s Admission Board.

The qualifying degree has to be passed with an average grade higher or equal to B (or a final grading higher or equal to B) according to the ECTS grading system, i.e. the best 35% of students (corresponding to a grade of up to 2.8 (“gut”/“good”) in the German grading scale); Knowledge of the English language, native speaker, or at least level B2 is required.

Field of activity

The program qualifies graduates for research-related and technical professional activities in the fields of

- Advanced mechanics for innovative materials and structures,
- Materials and structures under extreme conditions,
- Materials and structures in their environment.

It also prepares students for doctoral studies on advanced research topics related to the mechanics of materials and structures in the field of civil engineering.

Additional information

The students of each cohort study at TU Dortmund University in the first semester, at University of Trento in the second semester and at Ecole Centrale de Nantes in the third semester. The fourth semester is devoted to the Master Thesis’ work, which takes place either at one of the three Universities or at an international partner institution associated with the program.

The current tuition fee for the program stands at approximately 1500€ per semester. This sum encompasses the contribution to students' services, known as "Semesterbeitrag," at TU Dortmund University, along with the tuition fees required for enrollment at the University of Trento and Ecole Centrale de Nantes.
