Overview

In the first semester, students work on central current research and theoretical fields both empirically and theoretically. The master colloquia also provide space for ongoing debates of current social and scientific issues. In two inter-semester modules, students also deal with practical and theoretical questions of journalism and quality and editorial management. On the other hand, a two-semester module on international perspectives of journalism takes into account the development that journalism today no longer takes place solely in limited national communication spaces. The studies conclude with an independent academic Master's thesis.

Skills and knowledge

The prerequisite for enrollment is, on the one hand, a Bachelor's degree in journalism or a comparable subject with an overall grade of at least 2.5. In addition, a completed traineeship is required. If this was completed during the bachelor's degree, a duration of 12 months is sufficient. Otherwise, 24 months are required.

Field of activity

First and foremost, we train our students for journalism. However, graduates of the Institute of Journalism also work in PR, in corporate communications, in the political sphere or in management consultancies. Overall, the media are currently in a phase of upheaval. Digitalization is changing media use, and new ideas, concepts and routines are needed in editorial departments. This brings with it new career models. Many journalists work as freelancers. But there is also the classic permanent position - and due to the connections with the media partners of the Institute the prospects are quite good. A Master's degree can be an advantage when applying.
