Overview

The Master’s degree program in Chemical Engineering is research-oriented and enables students to work in research and development as well as to lead larger projects and working groups. The degree program offers the opportunity to deepen knowledge and skills in the field of chemical process engineering in all sub-disciplines represented at TU Dortmund University.

Graduates are prepared to independently develop new or improved chemical and biochemical products, production plants, or production processes. They typically work, for example, on making the chemical industry more environmentally friendly or on improving its efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and profitability.

The English-language specialization Process Systems Engineering provides graduates with in-depth knowledge of the basics of chemical process engineering. In particular, they acquire the ability to design and operate complex chemical and biochemical production plants, using mathematical models and computer software for simulation and optimization in accordance with the state of the art. This includes advanced methods of process control and production planning as well as techniques for the analysis and description of experimental data. Graduates understand the mathematical foundations of the computer programs used for simulation and optimization and are equipped to assess the limits of the tools and algorithms used.

Skills and knowledge

Candidates with an academic degree of Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering in accordance with ECTS regulations or a comparable course are admitted to the Master’s degree program in Chemical Engineering. For students who have completed a six-semester course (180 credits), the study duration in the Master’s degree program is four semesters. Students from other universities usually have to attend additional required courses. Foreign students who have obtained a Bachelor’s degree that is not in accordance with the ECTS regulations can also be admitted. Details on admission can be found in the admission regulations.

Field of activity

The Master’s degree program is particularly suitable for candidates who are interested in product- and process-related research and development.

Examples of career options:

  • scientifically oriented jobs in industry, administration, and research institutions
  • management positions in industry, administration, and research institutions
  • research work aimed at obtaining a doctorate doctoral qualification degree
  • further scientific work at other universities in Germany and abroad.
