On December 16, „Zwischen Brötchen und Borussia“ will focus on the history and future of the universe.

Why does beer foam form? What has happened since the big bang? And how do you distinguish between trustworthy and unreliable sources of information in the digital age? All of these questions will be addressed in the lectures of of the popular public lecture series „Zwischen Brötchen und Borussia: Moderne Physik für alle“ in the winter semester 2023/24.

During the first lecture „Physik des Bieres (und anderer Flüssigkeiten)“ as part of the Open House on October 28, Prof. Jan Kierfeld from the department of physics demonstrates the different characteristics of various liquids - from breakfast coffee to stadium beer. The focus is on the phenomenon on surface tension, which scientists have been researching for years and which impacts the shape of foam bubbles and coffee stains among other things.

On December 16, it continues with a look into the past and the future of the universe. Prof. Christoph Lange of the department of physics takes the participants on a journey from the formation of the first stars until the end of time and explains numerous physical concepts such as nuclear pasta and quantum vacuums.

In the new year the lecture series will resume: Prof. Holger Wormer from the institute of journalism and the Rhine Ruhr Center for Science Communication Research will talk about accessing reliable information on the internet in his lecture on January 13, 2024. Participants will learn which studies are trustworthy and how to recognize fake news on social media among other things. The focus will be on current medical and environmental topics.

On January 27, 2024, „Die Physikanten“ will conclude the lecture series with a show to celebrate the 20th anniversary of  „Zwischen Brötchen und Borussia“. The duo, founded by TU graduate Marcus Weber, will present spectacular experiments from the world of physics.

The first three events will take place on Saturday mornings from 10:30 until 12:30. The lectures will be held in the lecture halls 1 and 2 in the Lecture Hall Building II, Otto-Hahn-Straße 4. Viewers can join digitally via a YouTube livestream. The quiz for each lecture will continue to take place online and will be activated on the event website 15 minutes before the start of the lecture and deactivated 30 minutes after the event. The show of „Die Physikanten“ is planned to take place at 11:00 am on January 27, 2024 at the Dortmund U-Tower.
