The number of new students at TU Dortmund University has risen again slightly in the 2023/24 winter semester.

5,108 new students have joined TU Dortmund University in the 2023/24 Winter semester – 1.5 percent more than last year. As of 1 December, the total number of students was 30,277. Although this figure is lower than for the previous year, it is still high.

The university is also seeing an upward trend in international students: 5,347 are currently enrolled, which equates to 17.7 percent of all students, an increase of 1.7 percentage points compared to the previous year. TU Dortmund University currently offers 14 English-taught Master’s degree programs, seven of which were developed in the past three years alone. “This makes the campus even more attractive for international students,” says Professor Manfred Bayer, President of TU Dortmund University. “Excluding teaching degrees, already 30 percent of students on our Master’s programs have an international background. We prepare them and our German-speaking students in the best possible way for a career in international companies, where there is an urgent demand for well-trained specialists.”

Among other things, the new English-taught specialization “Industrial Mathematics” in the Master’s program in “Technomathematics”, which is being offered at the Department of Mathematics for the first time this winter semester and teaches mathematical tools for problem-solving in industry, is giving internationalization at the university a further boost. The new Bachelor’s degree program “Sustainable Energy Systems” at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, which tackles the challenges associated with the energy transition, also started in October. The new Bachelor’s degree program in Sociology was launched at the still young Department of Social Sciences in 2021. This has continued to gather momentum in its third year: Around 400 students are enrolled in the program, including 240 new students.

Around a quarter of all students at TU Dortmund University are enrolled in teaching degree programs: With 1,358 new students, this means that even 8.9 percent more students started these programs this year than in the 2022/23 winter semester. “We can only counter the shortage of teachers by offering more study places and supporting our students until they successfully graduate, for example through our mentoring programs,” says Professor Wiebke Möhring, Vice President Academic Affairs at TU Dortmund University. Teacher training at TU Dortmund University is broad-based, offering around 30 subjects for all five types of school.

Impact of the “Deutschland-Ticket” rail card and the shortage of skilled workers

According to provisional figures from Germany’s Federal Statistical Office, the total number of students nationwide remains high at 2,871,500 but has fallen slightly for the second time. North Rhine-Westphalia has seen a decrease of 4.1 percent. Across Germany, the impact of the “Deutschland-Ticket” rail card and the shortage of skilled workers on student numbers had been predicted. In addition, the particularly strong cohorts of new students up until 2019 are now leaving university, which is leading to a reduction in the total number of students.

At around 30,300, TU Dortmund University has also recorded a lower number of enrolled students. This is due to fewer students re-registering who were already enrolled. The Bachelor’s degree program in Computer Science is the one most affected by this. However, with over 2,900 enrolled students it remains the largest degree program at the university by far.
