Until the new building opens in 2028/29, the University Library offers various substitutes.

On Sunday, 6 August, the Central Library of TU Dortmund University will be open for the last time for users. After that, the building at the Mensa Bridge will close and be emptied: The approximately 1 million books will mostly be moved to a library stack for storage, the desks of the 1,300 learning workstations will partly be brought to alternative locations, and the employees will inaugurate their new offices at the interim location at Sebrathweg. The big move marks the beginning of the interim phase until the new building will open in 2028/29. Meanwhile, there will be extensive substitutes on campus, in the Technology Park at Sebrathweg and even in the city center.

Library locations

When the Central Library closes on 7 August, the Emil Figge Library (EFB) will be the central location of the University Library (UB) on campus. To accommodate this, the opening hours of the Emil Figge Library will be extended to 10 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays; it will remain closed on Sundays. Books from other locations can be pre-ordered and picked up here the next business day.

The transitional location at Sebrathweg in the Technology Park will open on 21 August. The library at Sebrathweg 7 will house 60,000 science and engineering books and 20,000 humanities and social science journal volumes. In addition, 240 learning workstations will be created here. The offices of the library’s employees will be located in Sebrathweg 9.

In addition, the two departmental libraries of the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering and the Department of Spatial Planning at the South Campus will remain in operation as usual.

Book lending

A large part of the 1 million books will be moved from the Central Library to a library stack for storage in Dortmund-Dorstfeld. Books can be ordered and will generally be delivered to the Emil Figge Library within 24 hours. Until the move has been completed (until the end of October at the latest), extended delivery times are to be expected. Books that will be kept at Sebrathweg can also be delivered to the Emil Figge Library on campus. Ordering is possible with the Catalog plus.

Learning workstations

The 1,300 learning workstations currently located in the Central Library will be fully compensated for by the winter semester. A co-learning space in containers on the North Campus already opened this spring (310 seats). As of 7 August, the gallery in the Mensa building can also be used for learning during the evening hours and on weekends (450 seats). Study groups can also book workstations in the International Meeting Center (IBZ).

In the library at Sebrathweg 7, about 240 stations for individual learning and group work will be available from 21 August; there will also be another co-learning space in containers on the South Campus. TU Dortmund University is also aiming to rent an office building in Dortmund City starting from the winter semester (as of now: 160 places). A current overview of all learning spaces can be found here:

Other facilities

Currently, the Hybrid Learning Center (HyLeC) is still located on the first floor of the Central Library. It will move to the co-learning space next to the North Campus Seminar Room Building in August and will reopen there on 1 September. The Information Center Technology and Patents and the University Archive will move to Sebrathweg 9. The University Archive will begin relocating on 1 August. The archival records will be brought to a storage repository and are expected to be available for reference again in early September.
