Particle physicist Dr. Johannes Erdmann from TU Dortmund University has been accepted by the German Research Foundation into the prestigious Heisenberg Program in recognition of the “high scientific quality and originality of his research projects at international level”. The German Research Foundation will now support the physicist for up to five years in the continuation of his top-class projects.

In the field of experimental particle physics, associate professor Dr. Johannes Erdmann is conducting research into the fundamental properties of elementary particles. His work centers on the heaviest known particles, the top quark and the Higgs boson. With the Heisenberg grant, Erdmann will conduct research at the ATLAS experiment hosted by CERN, the international research facility in Geneva. The experiment records the collisions produced in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) particle accelerator. Here, conditions are created that resemble those in the Universe shortly after the Big Bang. Researchers from throughout the world are gaining insights into the fundamental building blocks of matter. Erdmann is also focusing on improving experimental methods, especially by means of machine learning.

About Johannes Erdmann

Dr. Johannes Erdmann studied physics in Munich and completed his doctoral degree in Göttingen in 2012. From 2012 to 2014, he was a researcher at Yale University. He earned his postdoctoral teaching qualification at TU Dortmund University in 2019 with a thesis entitled “Search for physics beyond the Standard Model with top quarks at the ATLAS experiment”.

About the Heisenberg Program

With the Heisenberg Program, the German Research Foundation enables outstanding scientists who meet all the requirements for appointment to a permanent professorship to prepare for a senior academic role and to work on advanced research topics.
