The new EUREF-Campus is being built next to the long-distance railway station at Düsseldorf Airport.

To train specialists for the energy transition in North Rhine-Westphalia, the University Alliance Ruhr (UA Ruhr) intends to establish four new postgraduate Master’s programs for international students. For this purpose, the UA Ruhr partner universities – TU Dortmund University, Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) and the University of Duisburg-Essen – are joining forces with Hochschule Düsseldorf – University of Applied Sciences (HSD). The English-taught courses are to be hosted on EUREF-Campus Düsseldorf, where from 2024 onwards companies from the region will be working on energy, mobility and sustainability – important topics for the future. The four universities are in the process of establishing the structures needed to enable the first students to enroll in the 2025/26 winter semester. The plan is to offer up to 120 places per year from 2030 onwards.

The teaching portfolio will be part of EUREF-Talent Campus Düsseldorf. This is modeled on the first campus in Berlin, which went into operation in 2012. Three of the four planned Master’s degree programs aim to expand students’ knowledge in industrial engineering and teach the specialist know-how needed to develop sustainable solutions for energy systems, construction and mobility. Another engineering degree program will be dedicated to technologies for using renewable energy, with a focus on hydrogen. The principal target group is Bachelor’s graduates from abroad who have already gathered some initial professional experience and want to pursue their further career in Germany. Through scholarships, alumni of the four partner universities will also be able to benefit from the courses.

The rectorates of the four universities have now commissioned Akademie der Ruhr-Universität gGmbH with coordinating the development phase. “We are looking forward to the task, which is very important for society, of introducing new degree programs for international students in order to meet the demand for specialists in energy system transformation,” says Dr. Yves Gensterblum, the company’s managing director. The overall academic management of the degree programs is the responsibility of Professor Martin Faulstich from the Department of Spatial Planning of TU Dortmund University. The aim here is also to build up a wide variety of research partnerships with local companies. In particular for the competence field “Energy – Systems – Transformation”, which the UA Ruhr established in 2019, there are interesting points of reference with companies based on EUREF-Campus Düsseldorf, such as Schneider Electric SE, SPIE Deutschland, Convex Energy GmbH and WILO SE. Located next to the long-distance railway station at Düsseldorf Airport, the campus will open in 2024 and provide space for up to 4,000 employees of established companies and start-ups to develop innovations for the energy transition.

Close network of business and science

“As a member of the UA Ruhr, with this commitment we want to make a contribution to mastering the energy transition in North Rhine-Westphalia,” says Professor Manfred Bayer, President of TU Dortmund University. “To counter the growing shortage of professionals, it is essential that teaching has an international focus,” adds Professor Martin Paul, Rector of RUB. Professor Barbara Albert, Rector of the University of Duisburg-Essen, adds: “Effective transfer from basic research to collaborative projects with industrial companies will spawn innovations that have a socio-political impact and spill over into the region.” “With our strong engineering sciences in Düsseldorf, we want to advance climate protection together with our partners in the University Alliance Ruhr,” says Professor Edeltraud Vomberg, President of Hochschule Düsseldorf – University of Applied Sciences. “On a EUREF-Campus, business and science are closely networked in order to master together the challenges of the energy transition. We are very pleased that we have been able to attract this consortium of renowned universities for our second innovation campus in Germany,” says Karin Teichmann, spokesperson for EUREF AG’s executive board.
