TU Dortmund University cooperates with universities all over the world in a variety of ways. Its focus on the USA with excellent relationships with local universities and numerous student exchange agreements is unique in North Rhine-Westphalia. As part of the University Alliance Ruhr, TU Dortmund University is represented by joint liaison offices in North America and Eastern Europe/Central Asia. Here, research contacts are expanded and joint study and teaching projects are supported.

The International Office at TU Dortmund University is responsible for maintaining international relations. With a portfolio including support and advice, events and information, it supports mobility from all over the world and to all over the world - for students, researchers and employees. Built as a central forum for dialog on campus, the International Meeting Centre (IBZ) facilitates contacts between international students as well as to global companies.

TU Dortmund University's Internationality in 12 Figures

International Students: 5,350 students from all over the world from more than 120 countries are enrolled at TU Dortmund University (winter semester 2022/2023). This corresponds to 16% of the total student body.

English-taught degree programs: TU Dortmund University offers 15 master’s degree programs or master’s specializations that are conducted entirely in English

 

Outgoing mobility: In the academic year 2022/2023, 564 TU Dortmund University students went abroad for a study, internship or short stay. The three most popular destinations for these outgoings were the USA, Spain and Italy.

Strong focus on the USA: TU Dortmund University maintains excellent relationships with universities in the USA and therefore has a unique position within NRW. As part of a study, internship or short term program, 61 TU Dortmund University students (academic year 2022/2023) spent time in the USA.

Incoming mobility: In the academic year 2022/2023, we welcomed 232 exchange students from all over the world who were guests at TU Dortmund University as part of their studies, an internship or during a short-term stay. Most of these incoming students came from the USA, Italy and Türkiye.

10,000 international publications: Success through joint research! Between 2019 and 2023 alone, TU members published around 10,000 publications together with international partners.

Membership in international liaison offices/consortia: Cooperation and active exchange in international networks and consortia is of central importance to TU Dortmund University. Through its involvement in eight different international networks and liaison offices, existing partnerships are expanded and supported and new opportunities for international cooperation are developed.

Networking with partner universities: TU Dortmund University maintains partnerships with 701 universities at university and faculty level, which TU Dortmund University students can use for worldwide exchange.

Strong support for international researchers: Researchers can take advantage of five different mobility programs, awards and fellowships as well as come to TU Dortmund University for guest lectures or workshops via the tu.hosts.

306 international doctoral candidates: Almost every sixth doctoral candidate at TU Dortmund University comes from abroad  (winter semester 2023/2024) and is conducting their research stay at TU Dortmund University; most of them at the Faculty of Spatial Planning and the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Biology. The Internatonal Office's Welcome Services will support them as a point of contact for organizational questions and various concerns during this phase of their lives.

International alumni from over 70 countries: TU Dortmund University maintains relationships with its international alumni and stays in long-term contact with former graduates, exchange students and researchers via the "Alumni International" network.

International mobility of employees: The Erasmus+ program not only promotes the cross-border mobility of students, but also of university lecturers and our university staff. As part of "Teacher Staff and Staff Mobility", 26 TU Dortmund University employees were abroad in the academic year 2022/2023 .
