Teacher training at TU Dortmund University is based on the reformed Teacher Training Act of 2016, which provides for a six-semester bachelor's degree program for all teaching professions, followed by a four-semester master's degree program leading to the degree of Master of Education (M.Ed.). The university study program is followed by 18 months of preparatory service (Referendariat).

The program begins in all types of schools only in the winter semester.

The study program is oriented towards the development of the basic professional competencies for teaching and education, assessment, diagnostics, counseling, cooperation and school development, as well as the scientific and artistic requirements of the subjects. These competencies are taught in the subjects and the educational sciences. In addition, inclusion-oriented issues such as a professional approach to diversity and opportunities for joint teaching are taken into account.
