Overview
Master’s students look at the field of science journalism more from a research perspective after having been prepared for professional practice in the bachelor's phase. The Master’s degree program can open up an academic career.
On the other hand, students in the master’s phase should also expand their abilities to research topics in the natural sciences, technology and medicine in a structured manner and to report on them appropriately. On this basis, they should be enabled to work in journalism also in leading positions, especially in currently reporting mass media.
The following subjects are available for selection as a second major: Natural Sciences either with a major in Life Sciences/Medicine or with a major in Physics, Engineering/Technical Journalism either with a major in Mechanical Engineering or with a major in Electrical Engineering, and Data Journalism.
Skills and knowledge
Prerequisites for the Master’s degree program are a Bachelor’s degree in science journalism with an overall grade of at least 2.5 or an adequate course of study as well as a journalistic traineeship.
Field of activity
Most graduates work as permanent employees or freelance journalists for popular media. Furthermore, graduates of the program work in public relations for research institutions and companies in the political field or at management consultancies.
The Master’s degree program also prepares students for an academic career. In addition, important qualifications for a future leadership role in journalism are acquired.
