Were you aware before your studies that you had all the prerequisites for a scholarship? How did you become aware of the topic?
After school and the general university entrance qualification, most high school graduates have many questions buzzing through their heads. What should I study? Does this university meet my expectations, wishes and needs? How should I finance my living and my studies? Does it make sense to move out? This is what happened to me for a very long time. Through a friend and with the support of my teachers, I became aware of the Avicenna Studienwerk. My friend had applied and reported very positively about the Studienwerk, the scholarship holders and especially about the idealistic support program. At the time of my application, I could by no means imagine being accepted, but I had nothing to lose and applied with the support of my teachers.
In addition to good to very good school/study performance, commitment can also be a prerequisite for a scholarship. What kind of commitment did you show?
Volunteer work is a prerequisite for a scholarship at all 13 state-recognized scholarships for the gifted. Accordingly, a great deal of importance is attached to this in an application. It's not particularly important what activity you do, but that you give something back to the society in which you live and participate in daily events. During my school years, I participated in projects that were carried out at my school, and I supported them organizationally or with my knowledge. At the same time, I am still a volunteer in a club and have a great interest and pleasure in youth work in the club. In the meantime, I have been active there for four years and can say that the work takes up a lot of my time. I have been able to make a lot of friends and acquaintances throughout Germany as a result. However, I see the greatest benefit of my voluntary work in my self-development and self-realization. I would say that I am a creative person who is open to new experiences. However, this has not always been the case. In the course of my work and studies, I underwent a development in which I took on more and more responsibility and became more independent.
What does it mean to you to be a scholarship recipient?
Being a scholarship holder means for me a great responsibility towards the Studienwerk and my personal life and career. It is not a matter of course to be supported and encouraged financially and in one's interests over a long period of time. Accordingly, I think it is all the more important to live up to this responsibility. I try to pass on my acquired knowledge and skills to my fellow men and friends through my voluntary work. I also like to take on small tasks in the Studienwerk in order to give something back to it and to help shape it.
What special offers does your Förderwerk have that you can take advantage of?
The Avicenna Studienwerk eV is a denominational study institution. This means that in addition to professional training, seminars in the area of faith are also offered in the idealistic support program. For me personally, this was the decisive reason. I can say that I draw a lot of strength and joy from my religion. Another advantage is that I automatically have more in common with my fellow fellows than I would have at another sponsorship program. This has made it easier for me to make friends and establish contacts.
What tips would you give to prospective students and students who are interested in / would like to apply for a scholarship?
You have nothing to lose! When I applied back then, I couldn't imagine being accepted and today I've been in the program for almost three years. Once you have found a potential study program that matches your wishes and ideas, try to network with someone from the sponsorship program to get more concrete tips. If you were able to convince them with your application, there is not much standing in your way.
