Three questions for Katharina Schnetgöke - Talent Scout
Why do the students need you as a talent scout? I help students to really end up where they want to be after they finish school - in a field they are passionate about. Because if there's no fire, no real passion involved in choosing a career, it can work, but sooner or later it's usually unsatisfying and frustrating.
Discovering this fire and its meaning is often difficult for many students. In Scouting, researching together to find it or ignite it makes them want to look forward to the future. And what could be more motivating?! In addition, many students feel endless pressure when it comes to their future. They are afraid of making the wrong decisions, feel disoriented, or don't know what they are capable of or like. The certainty that "I don't have to go through this alone" helps to approach the question in an orderly manner.
How do you recognize talent? I have to ask a counter question: Who doesn't have talent? First of all, I assume that everyone has talent. Unfortunately, students often don't perceive themselves as having talent. So a large part of our task is to draw attention to potential and strengths step by step. This is often achieved by not only associating a talent with grades, but instead placing it in the context of the young people's respective lives. And poof, a whole lot of talent becomes visible. Fortunately, there are also many teachers who have a good sense of their students. When they think that a student could bring out more in them, we come into play.
For my work, one of the most important qualities here is my curiosity. I listen and I listen. This creates a good basis for a trusting collaboration with the students.
Talent found. What's next? I am then a constant fixed point for the students for questions, support, orientation and motivation. I grow with them over the next few years - as often, as long and as intensively as the students want.
