Direct application of results from science, joint research and development, and numerous networking and training opportunities – this is what the new Competence Center for Digital Production Technologies at TU Dortmund University is set to offer small and medium-sized companies in the region. The Competence Center, which involves four departments of TU Dortmund University and the City of Dortmund Economic Development Agency, was officially opened on 29 March.

“In order for companies to overcome current challenges resulting from technological change, the climate crisis and deglobalization trends, they have to depend on innovations. However, they often lack the time and sometimes the skilled workers and technical requirements for development projects. This is where the new Competence Center for Digital Production Technologies comes into play,” explained Prof. A. Erman Tekkaya, head of the Institute of Forming Technology and Lightweight Construction and initiator of the new center.

The Departments of Mechanical Engineering, Economics, Biological and Chemical Engineering as well as Electrical Engineering and Information Technology contribute their scientific expertise in the various fields and help companies increase their innovation potential. The Center for Entrepreneurship & Transfer at TU Dortmund University provides support in the form of seminars and networking events, and the City of Dortmund Economic Development and Aluminum Deutschland act as an interface between the companies in the region. Two partners from industry, Otto Fuchs and KIST, are also involved. The new Competence Center is part of TU concept GmbH, which, among things, implements economic transfer projects at the university.

Strengthening Dortmund as a hub for business and science

“Within the framework of the Competence Center, research projects can be implemented quickly and with minimal bureaucracy, meaning new technologies can be quickly applied in the world of business,” said Prof. Tekkaya. “It also provides the opportunity to pool existing networks and establish new partnerships in order to further strengthen Dortmund as a hub for science and business.”

Many representatives of regional companies took the opportunity to find out more about the new offerings at the opening event, which was also attended by TU President Prof. Manfred Bayer and Heike Marzen from the Dortmund Economic Development Agency.
