On 1 June, 1,250 athletes took part in the 36th Campus Run of TU Dortmund University.

On Wednesday, 1 June, after a two-year break due to the coronavirus pandemic, well over 1,000 people gathered again on Martin-Schmeißer-Platz, the central square on the university’s campus, to compete in the Campus Run or cheer on the participants. A new track record was set over the men’s 10-kilometer distance.

After rain showers at the beginning of the event at 5 p.m., it remained dry almost throughout so that conditions were good for the runners taking part. Around 1,000 spectators gathered along the route during the afternoon and evening, and 1,250 people in total took part in the races. The second largest team after TU Dortmund University was Helmholtz School in Dortmund, which formed 50 relay teams with 200 runners. The next largest team was from Dortmund University of Applied Sciences.

With around 400 registered participants, the most popular discipline, the 5-kilometer run, was opened by Professor Manfred Bayer, President of TU Dortmund University, who was pleased that the Campus Run could take place again. Lorenz Rix (TU Dortmund University, 18:08 minutes) and Lara Kiene (18:28 minutes) won. Jonathan Dahlke (University of Cologne, 31:42 minutes) and Alexandra Lang (39:33 minutes) were the fastest runners over the 10-kilometer distance – in the men’s race this even meant a new track record, which was previously held by Hendrik Pfeiffer, a student at TU Dortmund University.

The fastest in the 2.5-kilometer run were Jan Bily (9:12 minutes) and Karlotta Jule Kranz (10:07 minutes). The fastest team in the relay race was “Tri-Geckos Dortmund”: Niklas Simon Spinczyk, Jan Bily and Luis Austinat completed the 4 x 2.5 kilometers in 36:09 minutes. Joel Cetra (1:09 minutes) and Maike Drewenskus (1:22 minutes) won the Math Tower Run, which involves climbing the 220 steps of the highest building at TU Dortmund University. In the Kids Run, Moritz Frye and Johanna Zwinkau were the first to cross the finishing line after 600 meters.

The Student Council of the Department of Statistics had the best costume

This year, too, the search was on for the Campus Champs: The challenge consists of a triple event of Math Tower Run, 5-kilometer run and 10-kilometer run. Lorenz Rix and Arianna Nicole Cáceres Neira secured the title. The prize for the best group costume went once again to the Student Council of the Department of Statistics: Five students completed the 2.5-kilometer run dressed as Gameboys and Tetris blocks.

“It was great, after two digital versions during the pandemic, to finally be able to stage the Campus Run as a big event on site again,” said Christoph Edeler, Head of University Sports. “The teams of TU Dortmund University also delivered a fantastic performance in the NRW Uni Running Cup: For example, six members of TU Dortmund University were among the eight fastest runners over 10 kilometers.” To make the Campus Run possible, 35 helpers began setting up at 9 a.m.
