Academia Europaea elects Prof. Liudvika Leišytė for Membership

Prof. Liudvika Leišytė has been Professor of Higher Education at TU Dortmund University since 2013.

Prof. Liudvika Leišytė, Professor of Higher Education and Deputy Director at the Center for Higher Education (zhb), has been inducted into the Academia Europaea (Academy of Europe). The pan-European, non-governmental association of scientists and scholars aims to promote learning, education and research. Among the Academy's more than 5,000 members are 85 Nobel Prize laureates.

“I am deeply honored to have been inducted into the Academy of Europe, and I feel that the membership is an extraordinary recognition of my research achievements,” said Prof. Liudvika Leišytė at the welcome ceremony for new members held this October in Munich. The Academy grants membership by invitation only and elects members after a peer review process. In 2023, it inducted 303 new members, of which 37 reside and work in Germany. Prof. Leišytė is the third member of TU Dortmund University to be inducted into the Academy of Europe.

The non-governmental association acts as a European Academy of Humanities, Letters and Sciences. It aims to promote excellent scholarship in all academic fields and to advance scientific education for the benefit of the public. Furthermore, the Academy supports policymaking in Europe as part of the Scientific Advice Mechanism of the European Commission.

International research in Europe and beyond

In her research, Prof. Liudvika Leišytė focusses on the organizational transformation of higher education in the context of changing institutional environments. This includes the governance and management of universities, academic work as well as diversity and digitalization in higher education. During her international research career, Prof. Leišytė has led a team evaluating universities in seven European countries for the European University Association (EUA) and has conducted a study comparing the influence of institutional change on academic work in Europe and the US. According to her expertise, she will join the section “Governance, Institutions and Policies: Education, Health and Welfare”. Prof. Leišytė is looking forward to working with her fellow members: “I hope to further expand our collaborations with international top scholars and to contribute to the international networks of TU Dortmund University in teaching, research and academic entrepreneurship.”

TU Dortmund University appointed Prof. Liudvika Leišytė as Professor of Higher Education in 2013. She is Deputy Director at the Center for Higher Education (zhb), co-opted at the Department of Business and Economics, where she is co-lead of the Task Force Internationalization. Prof. Leišytė is a member of multiple editorial boards, an Advisory Board member of the Lithuanian Higher Education Quality Assurance Agency and an appointed member of the project selection committee of “Stiftung Innovation in der Hochschullehre”, a German foundation promoting innovation in higher education teaching.
