At the start of the semester, all universities in North Rhine-Westphalia committed themselves to taking action against abuse of power and to strengthening structures for prevention and counseling. We agree with all universities that assaultive behavior must not be tolerated. Those affected must have clear points of contact and receive help, and the structures must be generally reviewed.
At TU Dortmund University, we have already taken important steps in this direction: In the summer, a working group on abuse of power was constituted, and this month two new colleagues began their work in the counseling center for protection against discrimination and sexualized violence. In addition, the Rectorate recently adopted principles for good doctoral supervision, which include a supervision agreement. This is in anticipation of a change in the law envisaged by the NRW Ministry of Science to defuse dependency relationships.
You can find out more about what the universities' self-commitment declaration also provides for and what other measures and points of contact exist at TU Dortmund University in the following reports.
