Liebe Mitglieder und Angehörige der UA Ruhr,
sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,

eine Idee wird Wirklichkeit: Vor zwei Jahren suchte das Land NRW über die Ruhr-Konferenz in einem offenen Wettbewerb Ideen zur Förderung der Zukunftsfähigkeit des Ruhrgebiets. Durchgesetzt hat sich der Vorschlag, die internationale Spitzenforschung durch Einrichtung neuer Forschungszentren in der Universitätsallianz Ruhr zu stärken. Dabei handelt es sich um das größte Projekt, das das Land im Handlungsfeld Bildung und Forschung aktuell umsetzt. Nachdem unser Konzept im März wissenschaftlich überaus positiv bewertet worden ist, ist nun auch ein Kooperationsvertrag geschlossen: Gestern haben wir im Ministerium für Kultur und Wissenschaft den Gründungsvertrag für die Research Alliance Ruhr unterschrieben.

Damit entstehen in der UA Ruhr nun vier Research Center und ein College, die internationale Spitzenkräfte ins Ruhrgebiet locken sollen. Im Zentrum stehen drängende Zukunftsfragen wie die ganzheitliche Gesundheit von Mensch und Umwelt, Nachhaltigkeit und erneuerbare Energien sowie Vertrauen in digitale Systeme. Für die Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften entsteht eine themenoffene Plattform zum internationalen Austausch. Insgesamt 17 Gründungsdirektorinnen und -direktoren der TU Dortmund, der Ruhr-Universität Bochum und der Universität Duisburg-Essen werden den Aufbau in den kommenden vier Jahren gestalten. Das Land sieht dafür zunächst ein jährlich wachsendes Budget von insgesamt 75 Millionen Euro vor. Zur Verstetigung wurde ab 2025 ein Jahresbudget von 48 Millionen Euro in Aussicht gestellt.

Auch wenn die Research Alliance Ruhr eine eigene Forschungseinrichtung unter dem Dach der UA Ruhr werden wird, werden die Mitglieder der drei Universitäten enorm davon profitieren: Hier bieten sich nicht nur vielfältige Möglichkeiten zu Forschungskooperationen, sondern auch spannende Perspektiven für den wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchs oder neue Optionen für den Ausbau englischsprachiger Studieninhalte. Wir freuen uns darauf, die nächsten Schritte gemeinsam zu gehen.

Dear Members of the UA Ruhr,
dear Sir or Madam:

What started as an idea is now becoming a reality: Two years ago, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) sought out ideas to promote the future viability of the Ruhr region in an open competition as part of the Ruhr Conference. It was the proposal to strengthen cutting-edge, international research by establishing new research centers in the University Alliance Ruhr that came out on top. This is the largest project the state of NRW is currently implementing in the field of education and research. Following the overwhelmingly positive scientific evaluation of our concept in March, we have now also concluded a cooperation agreement: Yesterday, we signed the founding contract for the Research Alliance Ruhr at the Ministry of Culture and Science.

This means that four research centers and one college can now be established in the UA Ruhr, with the aim of attracting top international talent to the Ruhr area. Our main focus is on pressing issues facing the future such as the holistic health of people and the environment, sustainability and renewable energies, and trust in digital systems. We are creating an open platform for international exchange in any and all fields of the humanities and social sciences. A total of 17 founding directors from TU Dortmund University, Ruhr Universität Bochum and the University of Duisburg-Essen will be shaping the development of this platform over the next four years. The state is initially planning to allocate an annually growing budget totaling 75 million euros. An annual budget of 48 million euros has been earmarked for 2025 onwards.

Even though the Research Alliance Ruhr will be its own research institute under the UA Ruhr umbrella, the members of the three universities will benefit enormously from it: It opens the door not only to a wide range of opportunities for research collaborations, but also exciting prospects for young scientists and new options for expanding academic content in English. We are looking forward to taking the next steps together.
