Of course, we had hoped to receive funding under the Excellence Strategy, but things turned out differently: Our consortium, the Ruhr Innovation Lab, was not selected as a winner today—the Excellence Commission found five other applications stronger. Nevertheless, we remain committed to our partnership and intend to implement as many ideas from the proposal as possible, even without funding.
We continue to believe in the value of our strategic concept: Together, we want to develop solutions for a future-proof society. To this end, we will not only create freedom for new research ideas but also intensify our collaboration with citizens, the business community, and policymakers. Our goal is to contribute solutions to maintain prosperity, strengthen trust in the digital age, and safeguard the values of our democracy. We also aim to generate momentum to once again make the Ruhr Area a driving force for future-oriented transformation.
In addition to research and knowledge transfer, we have also designed a series of measures to advance talent development, diversity, and internationalization across all areas and to leverage synergies in the collaboration between the two universities. The Ruhr Innovation Lab is meant to be a space for experimentation where new ideas can be tested, enabling universities to respond more effectively to current developments.
Those most closely involved—who have been working on the application for up to two years—have already met today to discuss the prospects. We would like to invite all members to learn more about our project and ask questions during a virtual town hall meeting on Wednesday, October 7, at 2:15 p.m.:

You can also find more information and insights on both universities' websites. The news article includes a video message in which we provide an outline of our future plans for cooperation. We’d like to take this opportunity to once again thank everyone who supported the application and kept their fingers crossed for the Ruhr Innovation Lab!
