Since I received the key to the Rector's Office yesterday, there is no turning back: Today my eight-year term as Rector of TU Dortmund University begins.
# Rectorate The team in the Rectorate now includes the Prorectors Wiebke Möhring (Studies), Nele McElvany (Research) and Tessa Flatten (International Affairs) as well as the Prorector Gerhard Schembecker (Finance). They were elected on July 3 for a term of six years. Chancellor Albrecht Ehlers remains member of the Rectorate. The Rectorate meetings will continue to take place on Wednesdays, for the time being still as a zoom conference. At our first meeting on September 9, we will lay down the rules of procedure including the schedule of responsibilities. In mid-September we will have the first strategy meeting.
# Rectorate administration The Rectorate administration remains largely unchanged: The secretariats continue to be run by Violaine Venghaus and Jennifer Wilde (Office of the Rector), Regina Israel and Barbara Tuschewitzki (Office of the Prorectors) and Angelika Himmel (Office of the Chancellor). Sandra Czaja and Verena Risse will continue to work as executive assistants. Two vacant positions are currently being filled. For the time being, Bianca Schumacher from the Department of University Development and Organization will take over the management of the Rectorate meetings.
# Outlook In recent weeks, the new members of the Rectorate have already had a few informal discussions with the university administration to get oriented. In the coming weeks, we will arrange appointments for virtual or personal inaugural visits. Some of the ideas I had presented to the university election board about my term of office can be found in an online interview from April.
# Corona crisis Due to the corona crisis, the change of office needs partly to move at a very fast pace: Wiebke Möhring and I have already closely coordinated the planning for the winter semester with our predecessors over the past weeks. As you could see from the joint announcements, a continuous course is assured here. We also scheduled our first talks with the deans for tomorrow.
Certainly a university’s management board can achieve little without the backing and support of the university. On behalf of the entire team, I would therefore like to invite you to continue to support the work of the Rectorate and to commit yourself to the development of TU Dortmund University.
I am looking forward to our cooperation.
With best regards,
Manfred Bayer Rector
P.S. There is a small change I should not leave unmentioned: Unlike my predecessor you cannot reach me at rektorin@tu-dortmund.de. Please change your e-mail distribution lists.
