It was a great pleasure for me to welcome around 5,200 new students at the kick-off in the stadium, and I wish all students and university teachers a wonderful and successful semester. Just in time for the start of the lecture period, we were also able to inaugurate the new laboratory building of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology with over 300 workplaces. The library on Sebrathweg also opened its doors, temporarily providing space for around 240 study places as well as 70,000 books and journals.
And we were able to celebrate yet another opening this month: The Research Alliance Ruhr, in which we bundle top-level international research together with Ruhr University Bochum and the University of Duisburg-Essen, held a kick-off event with invited guests from academia and politics. Financed by the state government this cooperation addresses urgent challenges facing humankind in an interdisciplinary approach.
