Dear Readers:

As a place where we shape the future together, TU Dortmund University stands for freedom and democracy, respectful behavior and an open exchange of opinions. In June, two personalities visited the campus who, through their history, keep the memory of dictatorships in Europe alive and thus underscore the values of democracy.

Holocaust survivor Horst Selbiger was a guest at TU Dortmund University for the fourth time to tell his moving story and recall the crimes of the Third Reich. Ina Brandes, NRW Minister for Culture and Science, also emphasized how important it is to bring younger people in particular into contact with contemporary witnesses. Together with many other guests, she listened with interest to the 96-year-old's lecture in the Audimax.

Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Irina Scherbakowa spoke to a large audience about the work of the human rights organization "Memorial", which she co-founded in 1989 and which is banned in Russia today. The historian, publicist and Germanist, who now lives in exile in Germany, made an urgent appeal to defend freedom, democracy and human dignity, especially in these times.
