The Ruhr Area

Luftaufnahme des RuhrgebietsWith more than five million inhabitants from over 200 countries, the Ruhr Area is the largest urban agglomeration in Germany, and its face is shaped by dozens of towns and cities that have retained their unique character. From mines and furnaces to state-of-the-art technology and an extensive cultural landscape: old industrial sites and mines have been transformed into modern, exciting venues that host a wealth of cultural events and recreational activities. The Ruhr Area boasts more than 120 theaters, 100 concert halls, and 200 museums. These destinations are connected by an excellent transport infrastructure network, comprising public transportation, waterways, and the famous German 'Autobahnen'. Visitors, tourists and locals alike can thus explore national parks and riverside landscapes as well as former industrial sites that have been converted into nightclubs, swimming and diving pools, climbing areas, design museums, and much, much more.

University Alliance Ruhr

Since 2007, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, TU Dortmund University and the University of Duisburg-Essen have been cooperating in a strategic coalition known as the University Alliance Ruhr (UA Ruhr). By bundling their efforts, they expand their capacity and performance. Under the heading 'three universities, one community, endless opportunities' there are now more than a hundred collaborations in research, teaching and administration. With over 115,000 students and nearly 1,300 professors, UA Ruhr is one of the largest and most high-powered academic hubs in Germany.
